  • The CEO thinks UE6 can save the industry by making video game development more efficient.
  • The engine will help developers take players away from platforms like Roblox.

If the events of the last few days have made anything clear, it’s that the gaming industry is in dire need of a reset. Studios under the care of giants like Sony and Microsoft are being threatened with closure. At the same time, the next generation of PlayStation and Xbox hardware is set to be affected by memory shortages.

With AAA exclusives like Gears of War E-Day taking $400 million to produce, there seems to be no solution in sight. However, if you ask Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, Unreal Engine could end up being the industry’s savior.

Why it matters: The gaming industry does need a reset, but it remains to be seen if an engine powered by AI will be the answer.

While speaking at State of Unreal, Tim Sweeney stated that Unreal Engine 6 has been built to introduce a more efficient and different way of making video games. The Epic CEO said that he envisions a better future for the gaming industry, with high-quality games and interlinked communities.

We all need to change the way we build games. Build better games, more efficiently. We need to win the competition for players. Not only against other games but also against YouTube, TikTok, and everything else that people are doing online. This was very much on our minds when we set about building Unreal Engine 6.

However, developers need to change the way games are produced by developing them more efficiently and ensuring players feel like they are part of a global ecosystem. As per Sweeney, rising to this challenge has laid the foundations for Unreal Engine 6, and the engine will help video games compete with entities like YouTube and TikTok.

The Epic boss also highlighted the threat Roblox poses to the current AAA model, stating that closed ecosystems like that can take over the conventional industry system and eat gaming.

UE6 will be powered by generative AI.

However, Tim Sweeney thinks the industry can pave the way to a better future by using Unreal Engine 6 to face these challenges. The upcoming proprietary engine is already under fire for utilising generative AI, so it remains to be seen how UE6 will save gaming.
