Sony Reportedly Blocking Retailers From Allowing Marvel’s Wolverine Discounts On Discs

Is Sony Already Enforcing Strict Price Controls On Disc Editions?

Story Highlight
  • Sony has reportedly started blocking retailers from allowing Marvel’s Wolverine boxed edition discounts.
  • A local store in Brazil received an external demand to stop discount coupons for pre-order sales of the game.
  • The store halted the game’s pre-order sales rather than complying with the harsh demands.

The argument about physical games has ramped up ever since Sony revealed it’s ending disc production for first-party titles starting in 2028. Therefore, Insomniac’s upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine is among the few first-party games that will receive a disc moving forward.

A new report now reveals that Sony has allegedly started blocking retailers from allowing discounts for the boxed edition of Marvel’s Wolverine pre-orders.

A local store on a major digital online platform in Brazil was hit with this harsh demand by an ‘external’ party, fueling accusations from fans and experts that Sony is behind this move.

Why it matters: The report signals another alarming development in physical game media, especially if Sony is the external party behind this fiasco. Other retailers in Brazil and abroad could face similar demands in the future.

The local Brazilian store at the Shopee platform was forced to sell Marvel's Wolverine without discount coupons, so they halted the pre-order sales instead.

The affected store, Gamer Hut, on the Shopee platform shared its stance on Twitter, clarifying that it’s halting pre-order sales of Marvel’s Wolverine instead of complying with this demand. It refused to name the external party that pushed for this requirement.

The decision was made after receiving an external demand: to keep the product available, customers would not be allowed to use discount coupons offered by Shopee itself.

These discount coupons were offered by Shopee, but the customers using the platform would no longer be allowed to use them. Gamer Hut acknowledges that these coupons are meant to help gamers buy game discs at a more affordable price.

Marvel’s Wolverine
There’s a lot of excitement about Insomniac’s next AAA entry.

So, Marvel’s Wolverine boxed edition would have to be purchased at full price in Brazil. It’s also possible that Solutions 2 Go, the official distribution partner managing physical software and hardware releases across Brazil, could be behind this.

However, the game remains listed with promotional perks on Mercado Livre, which has only caused confusion about why only a single online store has been targeted for now. Neither Sony nor Solutions 2 Go has issued an online statement for now.
