Architectural Differences

1. Process Node: The first interesting thing on the specs sheet was that both the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti utilize an 8nm process node, ensuring efficient performance.
2. Clock Speed: The RTX 3060 Ti has a base clock of 1410 MHz and a boost of 1665 MHz, while the RTX 3070 Ti offers higher speeds with a 1575 MHz base and 1770 MHz boost.
3. VRAM: Moreover, the RTX 3060 Ti is equipped with 8GB of GDDR6X VRAM, providing ample memory capacity for gaming and content creation tasks. Similarly, the RTX 3070 Ti also offers 8GB of GDDR6X VRAM.
4. TDP: The RTX 3060 Ti operates with a TDP of 200W, making it a power-efficient choice. In contrast, the RTX 3070 Ti has a higher TDP of 290W, indicating its increased power requirements.

In my experience, the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti are currently the go-to mid-range NVIDIA GPUs. Although the RTX 4090 has capped off the RTX 30 series, for now, let’s explore the competition between the RTX 3060 Ti vs RTX 3070 Ti.

Gaming Benchmarks – 1440p

Time to dive into the crucial part of my comparison: the RTX 3060 Ti vs. RTX 3070 Ti gaming benchmarks. I’ll explore how much the RTX 3070 Ti surpasses the RTX 3060 Ti in terms of performance.

Testing Rig

• CPU: Intel Core i5-13600K 
• Motherboard: MSI MEG Z790 ACE MAX Motherboard
• Memory: Kingston Fury Renegade RGB DDR5 32GB 7200MHz
• Power Supply: ENERMAX REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W
• Storage Drive: Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus G 2TB NVMe SSD
• Operating System: Windows 11

Days Gone

• Our testing showed that the RTX 3070 Ti had an average framerate of 104 FPS in Days Gone, with the RTX 3060 Ti getting a 21% lower average of 86 FPS.
• The RTX 3070 Ti also won when it came to the lows with a framerate of 64 FPS, which is around 6.6% higher than the 60 FPS of the RTX 3060 Ti.

Control

• In our Control test, the RTX 3060 Ti got an average framerate of 70 FPS, which was around 28.5% lower than the 90 FPS of the RTX 3070 Ti.
• The minimum framerates were around 48 FPS on the RTX 3060 Ti, which was leagues behind the 79 FPS 1% lows of the RTX 3070 Ti, adding up to a 64% difference.

Cyberpunk 2077

• Both cards struggled in Cyberpunk, with an average framerate of 41 FPS on the RTX 3060 Ti, while the 3070 Ti averaged 55 FPS, being in the lead by around 34%.
• The RTX 3060 Ti won in our testing of the lows, with a minimum framerate of 32 FPS, while the RTX 3070 Ti had a framerate of 25 FPS, around 28% lower.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

• The RTX 3070 Ti averaged 74 FPS in AC Valhalla, which was 25.4% higher than the 59 FPS of the RTX 3060 Ti.
• The minimum framerates hovered around 54 FPS on the RTX 3070 Ti, which was about 14.9% higher than the 47 FPS average of the RTX 3060 Ti.

Hitman 3

• Testing Hitman 3 showed an average of 124 FPS for the RTX 3070 Ti, which was around 9.7% higher than the 113 FPS supplied by the RTX 3060 Ti.
• Minimum framerates were great on both GPUs, with the RTX 3060 Ti going down to 76 FPS, around 12% lower than the 85 FPS of the RTX 3070 Ti.

Call Of Duty: Warzone

• In our test of Call of Duty: Warzone, the RTX 3070 Ti leads by 22.5%, hitting 163 FPS compared to the RTX 3060 Ti’s 133 FPS.
• The 101 FPS of the RTX 3070 Ti led by around 15% over the 88 FPS that the RTX 3060 Ti pumped out.

Horizon Zero Dawn

• The RTX 3070 Ti kept its lead with an average of 88 FPS in Horizon Zero Dawn, which was 31% higher than the 67 FPS of the RTX 3060 Ti.
• The RTX 3060 Ti has lows of 47 FPS, whereas the RTX 3070 Ti was noticeably smoother with lows of around 56 FPS, constituting a 20% difference in performance.

Minecraft (Ray Tracing)

• In our final test, we measured the RTX 3070 Ti to have an average of 105 FPS in ray-traced Minecraft, 11.7% higher than the RTX 3060 Ti’s 94 FPS.
• In terms of 1% lows, the RTX 3070 Ti reaches 89 FPS, while the RTX 3060 Ti is at 79 FPS, constituting a 12.6% difference in performance.

Overall Gaming Performance

Average Framerate

To no one’s surprise, the RTX 3070 Ti took the cake regarding gaming performance, with a lead of around 13.3% on average in the games that we tested. The RTX 3060 Ti did not lose by a huge margin, but the difference speaks for itself.

1% Lows

The RTX 3070 Ti led by around 17% when it came to the 1% lows, with the RTX 3060 Ti barely touching the 60 FPS mark on average across the eight games we tested. These bumps were more noticeable than the difference in average framerates.

Both cards are good for gaming at 1440p, but the RTX 3070 Ti is obviously significantly better.

Average Power Consumption

The RTX 3060 Ti took around 31.2% less power compared to the RTX 3070 Ti, which is a huge difference compared to the difference in performance. The difference is so large, in fact, that you might have to reconsider your PSU with either card!

Average Thermal Statistics

Our tests showed a difference of 11.9% between the two cards, with the lower-tier GPU performing significantly better. Though the difference in thermals between these two cards is large in our testing, it is still nothing to be worried about.

Price And Availability

Our price research in September of 2024 shows that the RTX 3060 Ti is around 22% cheaper than its rival, though these prices are subject to change. Both cards can be had for a significant discount when looking at the used market.

What We Recommend

RTX 3060 Ti: In our testing, this card had decent performance all around. It had good enough power to play games at 1440p, a low power draw, and a much better price. However, this card might be reaching the end of its life sooner than the RTX 3070 Ti.

RTX 3070 Ti: The performance difference between this card and the RTX 3060 Ti was modest, all things considered. The noticeable downfalls of this GPU were its higher price and much worse power efficiency. Apart from that, it is a solid GPU to invest in.

Both cards performed closely in our testing, but our recommendation is to go with the RTX 3070 Ti unless you are on a tight budget.
