Seeing GTA 6 In All Its Glory Has Me Convinced That Rockstar Would’ve Even Gotten Away With $100 Base Price

With the $100 Version Already Being The Top Seller, I'm More Than Convinced That After Watching the Extended Look at GTA 6, Rockstar Could've Charged More Than $80, and Fans Would've Happily Paid.

Story Highlight
  • Rockstar debuted the extended look at GTA 6 gameplay on Netflix yesterday.
  • Watching the showcase has me convinced Rockstar could’ve charged more for the title.
  • Its scope, story length, advanced mechanics, and more are things we’ve never seen before.

Rockstar Games debuted the first-ever look at GTA 6 gameplay yesterday on Netflix. And boy, oh boy, if someone had any doubts about the title, they must have had them cleared up by seeing it in all its glory running on the base PlayStation 5.

The 26-minute showcase, which, by the way, is also up on YouTube now, provides us with tons of details about the game, including the visuals, the open world, driving, combat, and most importantly, our two protagonists.

For those of you living under a rock, GTA 6 is the first mainstream title to be priced at $80, not counting Nintendo’s Mario Kart World. There were certain doubts that games shouldn’t cost this much, but that shouldn’t be an issue now.

After watching the incredible extended look, I’m more than convinced that Rockstar Games might have even gotten away with pricing GTA 6 at $100 for the base game. The more expensive version is already the top seller.

Why it matters: We knew the studio is going all out with the game based on how long it’s been in development, but this first detailed look actually points towards how massive the scope of GTA 6 is going to be.

Rockstar’s Biggest World And The Longest Story

Let’s kick things off with GTA 6’s enormous map. The studio has confirmed that the State of Leonida in the game is double the size of GTA 5’s San Andreas, and a whopping thrice the size of Red Dead 2’s massive map.

In addition, just the main area, Vice City, is twice the size of Los Santos, and 11x the size if we include all its surroundings. This gives us a great idea of how big the developers were thinking, and how huge the world is going to be.

A huge part of the world is our two new protagonists, Jason and Lucia. Previously, the title for the longest story in Rockstar’s incredible roster belonged to Red Dead Redemption 2, which will now take second place.

GTA 6 Map Size

Compared to Red Dead 2’s nearly 50-60 hour story length, GTA 6 will take a behemoth 80 hours to complete the main story. Now, with so much additional content thrown in the mix, we are getting insane playtime.

These things alone justify the $80 price tag, and I think that Rockstar could’ve charged even more. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg, and we still have a lot more to unpack to understand the scale.

Advanced Mechanics And Gameplay Elements

We are seeing some of the most advanced gameplay elements in GTA 6 detailed by the extended look and the previews that preceded it. Let’s take the criminal filing mechanic, for instance, which is something brand new.

This is a new take on Red Dead 2’s honor system, and it has been significantly evolved. Officers will be able to completely profile you; they’ll know how you look and how you commit your crimes, and you can read more here

Furthermore, there are advanced gym mechanics that can affect your player’s health throughout the course of the game. You can buy a membership, eat clean, and get fit, and missions might feel easier in certain cases.

Another instance is the relationship system between Jason and Lucia. While they seem really close in the beginning, things like not answering texts, irrational decisions, and more can seriously deteriorate your relationship.

Other stuff like driving, combat, and jumping using a parachute all seem to have gotten a lot of polish from the studio’s previous games. Some of these things had been a point of constant criticism with past releases.

The Sheer Number of Activities And Everything Going On

The number of activities that you can do throughout the State of Leonida is insane, and one of my favorite upgrades in GTA 6. You can create the largest worlds, but if they aren’t interesting, people will call you out.

Rockstar knew this, and they’ve introduced hundreds of activities on the map. You can do everything from playing basketball to driving dirt bikes to going shopping and eating dinner, which is super cool in my opinion.

Then there’s the incredible work they’ve done wth the NPCs. Previews reveal that there are over 600,000 NPC animations. So, most of the people you’ll see on the streets will be doing something unique and have their personalities.

This makes even more sense if you see the amazing NPC density in all parts of the map. Other things might sound simple, but are actually brand new, like the studio recorded full TV shows that you can watch.

I was also really impressed by how amazingly well the base PS5 was handling the title. It is locked to 30 FPS, and the 4K is probably upscaled, but everything was crisp and a proper showcase of next-gen visuals.

So, these are some of the reasons I think that spending over $80 on GTA 6 would’ve been worth it. But at $80, we are getting amazing value out of it, and Rockstar deserves to be applauded for that.
