The Game Received An Impressive 89 Score On Metacritic!

Story Highlight
  • Resident Evil Requiem has scored 89 on Metacritic, becoming the series’ highest-rated new release in over 2 decades.
  • 2005’s Resident Evil 4 held the previous record.
  • Resident Evil Requiem is already Steam’s best-seller and is looking to be our first GOTY contender for 2026.

With less than 48 hours left till the game’s launch, the review embargo for Resident Evil Requiem has been lifted, and spoiler alert: fans can expect nothing less than a masterpiece.

Already a critical success, Resident Evil Requiem has earned an impressive 89/100 on Metacritic. This makes the game the highest-rated mainline entry in the series in nearly 21 years, a feat previously held by 2005’s Resident Evil 4.

Why it matters: Recent Resident Evil games have all maintained consistent quality, but many of those releases were remakes of earlier entries. Now, with a new mainline release, Capcom has shown that it still has it in them to deliver the same level of quality after all these years.

The Game Is Already Steam’s Best-Seller Ahead Of Launch

For reference, here’s the Metacritic score of all mainline Resident Evil games since 2005.

As seen, Resident Evil Requiem beats out 2021’s Village by 5 points. One of the biggest reasons for this game’s success is Leon Kennedy’s return. His appearance was one of the longest-running rumors in the gaming industry.

Leon Kennedy stars alongside Grace Ashcroft in this game, the latter of whom is a brand-new character, an FBI agent. Grace’s gameplay sequence brings the series back to its survival-horror roots, while Leon’s part is more action-oriented.

Hence, both different playstyles create a contrast that works really well. In any case, it seems that Resident Evil Requiem is 2026’s first GOTY contender. The game launches on February 27th, and beyond the base game’s release, insider also expects a DLC expansion later this year.
