One of The Most Successful Horror Games of All Time!

Story Highlight
  • Resident Evil 4 towered above the rest and was the best-selling remake of this generation.
  • It has sold a whopping 16.8 million copies and generated over $560m in revenue.
  • This makes it one of the most successful single-player horror games of all time.

Remakes and remasters have become a vital part of the gaming industry. They open up some older legendary titles to a whole new audience and are easier and cheaper to develop most of the time compared to a brand-new title.

We’ve seen plenty of new remaster/remakes this generation, but Resident Evil 4 was by far the highest-selling game among all, with nearly 17 million units sold across all the platforms, and over $550 million in revenue.

Why it matters: The original title was already considered among the finest games in the franchise. Capcom giving it the remake treatment improved nearly everything, making it even better than the 2005 release.

RE4 was the best-selling remake/remaster this generation

According to Alinea Analytics, Resident Evil 4 was the best-selling remake/remaster this generation. It beat the second-place Ark: Survival Ascended by a long shot, which has nearly 10 million fewer units sold.

It is staggering how successful Capcom’s remake has been. The data also reveals that it is among the most successful horror games of all time and, even a couple of years after release, still sold 4 million units in 2026.

Resident Evil 9
It is also among the most successful horror games of all time

The rest of the games included in the list are The Last of Us Part 1, Oblivion Remastered, Dead Space, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Silent Hill 2, all of which also boast outstanding sales numbers, though not as high as RE4.

This shows why the remakes have been so essential to the industry. Recently, the Mario creator also stated that they are essential as they not only introduce older games to a new generation, but also possibilities to evolve stories.
