Releases 2026 To Celebrate Resident Evil's 30th Anniversary!

Story Highlight
  • Two sources have pointed to the existence of Resident Evil 1 Remake, with plans for a 2026 launch.
  • Capcom has already remade this entry several generations ago.
  • A new remake would be built on the RE Engine and completely modernize this entry.

Capcom has been working its way through the Resident Evil franchise with a series of remakes. What started with the second game culminated in an excellent remake of Resident Evil 4 last year, a release that is now this IP’s fastest-seller.

However, it seems the studio has plans to break the order and revisit an older game to remake soon. While evidence has suggested that a remake for Resident Evil 5 is in the works, a popular leaker claims the studio intends to give the same treatment to Resident Evil 1.

Why it matters: Resident Evil 1 has already received a remake in the past, and a remastered version of this remake can be played on modern consoles.

The leak comes from DanielRPK, a popular insider known for information on Marvel films and television. According to his latest Patreon post, Capcom intends to remake the original Resident Evil.

He also states that this project is targeting a 2026 launch. A similar report came from another source recently, who pointed out that 2026 would mark Resident Evil’s thirtieth anniversary.

If true, these reports mean that Resident Evil 5 Remake is likely to take a backseat. This project may debut after Capcom remakes the first release of the IP, providing fans a means to experience the first four games of the series from a modern lens.

As mentioned earlier, the first game has already received a remake from Capcom. However, this remake is much closer to the older style of Resident Evil, including fixed camera angles and more dated mechanics than one would expect in a modern Capcom release.

A potential remake built on the RE Engine would provide a completely different experience for fans of the original entry. It could also give Capcom one final shot at capturing the true essence of this IP’s survival horror before it moves on to the more action-packed entries.

Other rumors suggest Resident Evil 9 is also in the works. This game is said to be aiming for a 2025 launch, with the studio aiming to release the entry as early as January next year.
