- The PS6 and its handheld only have a 30% gap in RAM.
- The console will launch with 30 GB of RAM, while the handheld will possess 24 GB of memory.
- Such a difference will only apply to resolution and won’t hold back the console.
Whether you like it or not, the PS6 is right around the corner, with many insiders predicting that Sony is aiming for a 2027 launch. The price of the console is still up for debate, but considering its 10x better Ray Tracing and ML-based frame generation, the $1,000 price tag doesn’t feel too far-fetched.
Regardless, one thing has been confirmed by multiple leakers, and that is the PS6 handheld, which will launch alongside the next-gen hardware. Sony has already started informing developers about this transition, and according to an insider, the handheld won’t hinder the console at all.
Why it matters: It seems like Sony has learned from the mistakes of Xbox and decided not to create a massive gulf between its primary home console and its lite variant.
While speaking on the Broken Silicon podcast, insider Moore’s Law is Dead revealed that PS6 won’t be held back by the new handheld, as the RAM difference between the two is less than 30%.
It’s a less than 30% difference in VRAM. The Series S and Series X had a 60% difference in VRAM, which is why the Series S holds the other one back. A less than 30% difference might just be a difference in resolution.
As per the leaker, the handheld will ship with 24 GB of RAM, while on the other hand, the PS6 console will have 30 GB of RAM. Hence, this 30% threshold will merely translate to a resolution difference between the two.
Furthermore, smaller and lower-resolution textures will be applied via an automated system that will download the appropriate assets to each device. Hence, the memory gap won’t be a hassle for developers either.

The insider also mentioned the Xbox Series S, explaining that the console only hinders Series X because the VRAM difference between the two is a whopping 60%. The lack of available memory in the 2020 console is even allowing hybrids like Switch 2 to outperform it now.
However, the PS6 handheld reportedly matches Intel Panther Lake’s performance with half the power and could be 3x faster than the Switch 2. Therefore, it feels like Sony has considered this issue and learned from its competitor’s mistakes.
