Selling 10 Million Copies Won't Cut It For GTA 6!

Story Highlight
  • GTA 6 has to sell at least 25 million copies on day one to meet the industry expectations.
  • Multiple analysts have forecasted that figure, and selling even around 10 million would be disastrous for the game.
  • It is one of the most expensive entertainment media, so initial sales need to match that scale for success.

Despite some fears, multiple tidbits over the months have solidified that Rockstar Games plans to launch GTA 6 this coming fall. The game’s marketing campaign is just around the corner, so industry anticipation for the open-world behemoth has climbed to an all-time high.

A new report now claims that GTA 6 needs to sell upwards of 25 million units within 24 hours to set itself on a path to success. Selling anything less, even an absurdly high 10-15 million figure, would be ‘considered disastrous’ for the project.

Why it matters: GTA 6 is one of the most expensive games in production, so it carries some of the heaviest industry. It’s no surprise the game needs to sell an absurd number on day one just to be considered a financial win.

The report by Bloomberg’s insider, Jason Schreier, notes that the 10 million figure would be a great milestone for any other title. However, it’s a different story for GTA 6, since its budget is said to climb over a billion USD amid rising development costs and other expenses.

Development costs have gone up and up. And we really do aim to deliver the highest quality entertainment on Earth. And that is costly.

-Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two Interactive CEO.

The report also highlights that GTA 6 development teams are given unlimited financial budget to whip the game into the best shape possible since the Take-Two CEO finds industry expectations ‘terrifying.’

GTA 6 arguably has the biggest shoes to fill in the gaming industry in the entire decade.

Selling around a 25 million milestone in 24 hours would give GTA 6 the initial push to eventually break even in the future. An earlier report also said that Take-Two was considering an internal milestone of 18-20 million copies sold on day one of release in late 2025.

On a side note, Jason also mentions that GTA 6 is skipping PC launch since Rockstar believes its core consumers are on consoles.
