GTA 6 Is The Biggest Game In History With A Budget Of Over $1 Billion, Confirms Take-Two

Expect A High Game Price To Recoup This Budget!

Story Highlight
  • Take-Two has confirmed that the GTA 6 development cost is over $1 billion.
  • This makes it the biggest game in history.
  • Such high development costs mean the game will likely launch at a premium price and could set a new precedent for future game pricing.

Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, has just confirmed that GTA 6 started development in 2020, which only puts the game at around five years old. As such, the delay really makes sense so that Rockstar can achieve the highest quality yet.

In its latest earnings call, Take-Two revealed how much it took to develop GTA 6. They estimate the development cost to be more than $1 billion, making it the most expensive video game ever.

Why it matters: In just five years, GTA 6 has exceeded a budget of $1 billion, which shows Rockstar’s commitment to perfecting the game and making it the biggest release in history.

In the latest financial report, Take-Two debunked the previous rumors that GTA 6 might cost around $2 billion to make and that the actual cost is just over $1 billion. This likely includes the marketing and every other cost associated with the development.

Just for reference, the average AAA game costs around $100 to make, and GTA 6 costs ten times as much.

With such a high development cost, the question arises of how much the game will cost players. Reports have suggested a price tag as high as $100, which doesn’t seem too far off since Rockstar will have to recoup its development cost, and that just isn’t possible with a $60 or $70 price tag.

Star Citizen is the only title with a development cost close to GTA 6’s. The game has received almost $800 million in crowdfunding, has been in development for over 12 years, and is still in its Alpha stages.
