Petition To Save Physical Games Slows Down As PlayStation Moves Forward With Physical Disc Cancellation

Fans Are Giving Up On The Fight Against PlayStation?

Story Highlight

  • Following PlayStation’s announcement to end physical disc production, fans started a petition to save physical discs.
  • While the petition started out strong, it has only gained 56,000 signatures in the last three weeks.
  • The industry appears to be moving on from the subject, which would ultimately prove PlayStation’s point to be true.

Last month, PlayStation suddenly confirmed the end of physical disc production. A lot has happened since then, with fans still trying to get the gaming giant to reverse course until recently. However, the Sony CFO has confirmed that the gaming giant is moving forward with this decision despite the latest backlash.

With PlayStation showing no signs of backing down, fans are seemingly losing interest in the fight to save physical games. In fact, the ongoing petition to revert this decision is also losing steam now.

Why it matters: PlayStation’s decision to end disc production will change the industry as we know it, so fans giving up the fight so soon comes as a huge disappointment to many enthusiasts of physical games.

Looking at the petition, it currently stands at a whopping 356,452 signatures. While impressive, this figure hasn’t changed much over the last few weeks.

In fact, the petition hit 300,000 signatures nearly three weeks ago. It took another week to reach 35,000 signatures, and since then, the petition has only garnered another 20,000 signatures.

Perhaps the most interesting part is that Sony’s acknowledgement of the subject didn’t spark additional interest in this petition. One would have imagined that PlayStation confirming plans to move forward with the decision would have further riled up players and led to more signatures for the petition.

However, this has clearly not been the case. If nothing else, fans seem to be coming to terms with the digital-only future, something PlayStation argues the market has already accepted.

In the wake of dwindling momentum, perhaps fans will turn to a new initiative in an attempt to remain vocal about the issue. The silver lining in the situation is that Xbox, at least for now, appears to have no plans to follow suit.
