Xbox Continues Horrible Run Of 0 First-Party GOTY Nominations For 12th Year Running

Story Highlight
  • No Xbox first-party title has been nominated for GOTY for the 12th year in a row.
  • Xbox Game Studios earned 5 nominations at TGA 2025, with Microsoft’s Bethesda also adding 4.
  • However, neither The Outer Worlds 2 nor Indiana Jones could get a GOTY shoutout.

The Game Awards has finally announced the nominees for its most coveted Game of the Year, and many of the usual suspects like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2, and Hollow Knight: Silksong unsurprisingly made the cut.

PlayStation/Sony ended up as the most nominated publisher at the awards show, with both Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2 getting 8 nominations each. On the other hand, however, Xbox failed to make its mark in the biggest category once again.

Why It Matters: Despite many acquisitions and dozens of studios under its belt, Xbox and Microsoft have failed to produce a first-party game worthy of a GOTY nomination, with even Bethesda failing multiple times under the American giant.

Outer Worlds 2
Outer Worlds 2 failed to grab a GOTY nomination despite good reviews.

For the 12th year in a row, no first-party Xbox title has been nominated for GOTY at The Game Awards. Xbox Game Studios did end up with 5 nominations overall, but none of its major releases could get their name in the hat for Game of the Year.

South of Midnight took home 2 nominations, one for innovation in accessibility and the other for games for impact with both Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, also making the list of best role-playing titles.

But, even accounting for Bethesda’s AAA offerings like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom the Dark Ages, Microsoft only went home with 9 nominations, ten less than long-term competitor PlayStation.

And, this has been going on for 12 years at Xbox, with the publisher’s in-house AAA titles like Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War 4 failing to get into the running for GOTY.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle from Bethesda also failed to score a GOTY nomination.

Even after its purchase of Bethesda, however, games like Indiana Jones: The Great Circle and Starfield have failed to make a dent.

Many are arguing that Psychonauts 2 amounted to an Xbox nomination in 2021. However, Double Fine explicitly announced that it wasn’t a Microsoft or Xbox exclusive before releasing it on all platforms, as the game was already developed and wasn’t an in-house Xbox production.

Do you think any Xbox title deserved a GOTY nomination in 2025? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.

The Next Silent Hill Game Is Reportedly Set To Launch In Early 2026

Story Highlight
  • The release date of Silent Hill Townfall has already been leaked by a Mexican online store.
  • The game is a spin-off in development by Screen Burn in collaboration with publisher Konami and Annapurna Interactive.
  • It is expected to launch on March 26, 2026, and Konami may announce a transmission soon to confirm it.

The Silent Hill IP has made a strong comeback in recent years. The last game, Silent Hill F, was well received for its unique horror elements that strayed away from the series’ formula without ruining its essence. Therefore, fans have been looking towards what’s next.

It appears that the next SH entry is launching much sooner than anyone expected. Silent Hill Townfall, the anticipated spin-off in development by Screen Burn, is apparently launching on March 26, 2026, just 6 months after Silent Hill F made its debut.

Why it matters: Silent Hill Townfall’s success could usher in a new age for spin-offs, which explore various formats and genres that stand out from the mainline entries.

The game’s release date was leaked on the e-shop Liverpool Mexico. Fortunately, the Polish outlet CD Action captured screenshots of the listing before the shop wiped the date. The date quickly being deleted also adds to the credibility of the rumor.

Notable Silent Hill figure Rachel Ashmun also corroborated the leak on Twitter, clarifying that the date is too specific to be a placeholder. Therefore, Konami might be preparing a new transmission to announce the date officially.

It might even be shown at Microsoft’s newly announced Xbox Partner 2025 showcase.

Silent Hill Townfall
Not much is known about Silent Hill Townfall.

We can also expect new details about Silent Hill Townfall, as nothing official has been revealed since the teaser trailer three years ago. The community is still concerned about its progress since its development has faced controversies in the past.

A past leak suggested that Silent Hill Townfall will be based on short stories that focus on ghosts from a town’s past. The gameplay will match The Short Message’s format, so there won’t be any weapons but only jumpscares, investigations, and pursuit footage.

On a side note, a Silent Hill 3 remake is also reportedly in development and planned to launch in 2028.

Do you think Silent Hill Townfall will prove to be a massive release in the franchise despite being a spin-off? Are you looking forward to it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Sets Record As The Most-Nominated Game in TGA History

Story Highlight
  • Clair Obscur has now become the most-nominated game in TGA history.
  • The RPG has the best chance of winning the GOTY awards among all nominees.
  • The game is already on pace to become one of the most decorated titles in gaming.

2025 has brought a much-needed change in the gaming industry after a few rough recent years, plagued by subpar AAA and AAAA releases. However, this year’s rise in AA and indie titles shows that creativity and risk-taking are the most critical factors in a game’s success.

A month before The Game Awards show premieres, nominees for the 2025 GOTY award have been listed. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has made the list to no one’s surprise, and on top of that, it is now the most nominated game in the show’s entire history.

Why it matters: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was a passion project from veteran developers. This passion and creative approach will certainly inspire more developers to push out great releases.

Even for all the GOTY nominees, Clair Obscur is likely to snatch the crown despite the tough competition from other games like Silksong, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and more.

Previously, at the Thailand Game Show, the turn-based RPG had already won a GOTY award. Clair Obscur is becoming one of the most decorated video games in history with this ongoing pace.

Already, the game has a near-perfect user score on Metacritic and on the PlayStation Store, further highlighting its widespread success across all types of players. Unfortunately, the game was robbed at the Grammy’s by not even being nominated in the first place.

Still, there are lots of other opportunities for Sandfall Interactive’s RPG. In other news, a sequel to the game is already in the works, and just days after its release, a movie adaptation deal was also secured, promising great things for the IP in the near future.

Game of The Year Nominees Officially Unveiled For The Game Awards 2025

Story Highlight
  • Geoff Keighley has officially revealed the nominees for the 2025 GOTY award.
  • The list includes Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2, KCD2, Silksong, and more.
  • The winner will be revealed at The Game Awards set for December 11, 2025.

It’s that time of the year again, when one title rises above all to win the Game of the Year award. 2025 has been one of the finest years for gaming, especially highlighted by lower-budget and indie titles, but there were brilliant AAA releases, too.

Geoff Keighley has officially revealed the nominees for the Game of the Year 2025 award, highlighting that the list includes Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, but there have been some snubs as well.

Why it matters: Most fans will be happy with the list, as it includes the year’s top-rated games. However, some will be disappointed by the absence of notable names.

GOTY 2025 nominees
The nominees for Game of the Year 2025 are now official

The Game Awards 2025 are officially set to take place on December 11, 2025, and the list of nominees for the prestigious award includes:

  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
  • Donkey Kong Bananza
  • Hades 2
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

This is one of the most solid lists in recent years, and everyone has a fair chance to win. Interestingly, out of the six nominees, only 2 are AAA titles, 3 are indie titles, and one is a Switch exclusive title.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is widely considered the most solid nominee

Notably, this year’s snubs include Ghost of Yotei, which received solid reviews and was dubbed an upgrade over its predecessor. The other notable name missing is Split Fiction, one of the highest-rated Metacritic titles for 2025.

Nonetheless, it’s a pretty solid list, and most people are already betting on Expedition 33 to take the accolade. However, the final results will be revealed at TGA, which is less than a month away.

Capcom Forecasts Stronger Launch Sales For Resident Evil Requiem Than Resident Evil Village

Story Highlight
  • Capcom outlined expectations for Resident Evil Requiem in its latest investor Q&A.
  • The gaming giant believes it can outperform Resident Evil Village’s launch with the upcoming title.
  • Capcom also announced that recent excitement around the series had boosted sales for other entries in the franchise.

Resident Evil Requiem is set to release in just three more months, marking an exciting period for Capcom. The publisher seems to be doing a lot right with this release, staying true to the series’ horror roots after the action-packed gameplay of Resident Evil 4 Remake.

As such, Capcom also has big expectations for the title. In fact, the gaming giant says it hopes to outperform Resident Evil Village at release.

Why it matters: Resident Evil Requiem is among the series’ fastest-selling games behind Resident Evil 4 Remake, with the latter selling 3 million copies in 2 days.

In its latest investor Q&A, the Japanese publisher was asked to outline expectations for Resident Evil Requiem. Capcom stated that the game has already received plenty of praise, setting the stage for initial sales performance outperforming Resident Evil Village.

For context, Resident Evil Village first arrived in 2021 and quickly sold as many as 3 million units in just 4 days. This figure has more than doubled now, with the title first achieving 10 million sales in 2024.

Because Capcom has already seen the excitement for Resident Evil’s upcoming entry, the gaming giant appears confident it can beat this record, outlining better performance to the investors as an expectation.

Recent Capcom titles like Monster Hunter Wilds have also sold 10 million units in a single month, so the publisher appears to have faith Resident Evil Requiem will perform similarly well, even if it fails to match Monster Hunter Wilds’ recent debut.

Also, Resident Evil Requiem will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on day one, giving it a major edge over the other entries in the series due to Nintendo’s huge audience.

In the same Q&A, Capcom noted that the entire Resident Evil series had seen improved sales as a result of the upcoming game’s anticipation. Therefore, the publisher seems to be gearing up for a huge release in Q1 2026.

What do you think of the studio’s expectations? Do you think its upcoming title will beat Resident Evil Village? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

How to Optimize Your Gaming Rig for a Data Science Major

Story Highlight
  • A standard gaming PC is usually powerful enough to handle data science coursework without needing a new workstation.
  • To use an Nvidia GPU for data science, install the Nvidia Studio Drivers and the CUDA Toolkit.
  • The essential software libraries for beginners include Pandas (for data cleaning), NumPy (for math operations), and Scikit-learn (for basic machine learning models).

If you’re a gamer stepping into a data science major, you’ve probably wondered whether your RGB powerhouse can handle more than late-night ranked sessions. I had the exact same thought when my course load started filling up with coding, data crunching, and projects that needed serious GPU muscle.

The cool part? I didn’t have to buy an expensive workstation. My gaming PC was already a beast; it just needed a few tweaks.

And yeah, while I did get help with writing an essay for one of my electives, I wanted to make sure my setup could actually survive the heavier data science stuff. After a lot of trial, error, and frustration, here’s what actually worked for me.

Your GPU Is Not Just for Games

RTX 5090 Is Only 20% Faster Than RTX 4090
The graphics card used for gaming, especially Nvidia models, is a key tool for speeding up machine learning tasks.

One of the biggest surprises for me was realizing that my GPU was not only good for smooth frames in shooters. The same power that helps me run big open-world games can also run machine learning tasks faster.

Models that once crawled on my old laptop suddenly trained in minutes. If you have an Nvidia card, especially something like an RTX 3060 or anything above it, you already have an advantage over half your class.

What worked for me was sticking with Nvidia because it works best with the most popular machine learning tools right now. I also switched to Nvidia Studio Drivers. These are built for stability and work rather than gaming.

Installing the CUDA Toolkit was another important step because it allows your code to use the GPU properly. None of this was complicated, but the difference it made was huge.

Trying to code on Windows while Steam notifications and Discord messages kept popping up was a complete disaster. I eventually set up a dual boot with Linux. I used Ubuntu because it is the easiest to live with. Windows stayed as my gaming environment.

Linux became my study zone. Booting into a clean workspace without distractions helped far more than I expected. Most real data science jobs already use Linux, so getting comfortable with it early feels like a long-term win.

The Software Stack That Actually Matters

TensorFlow vs PyTorch

Once I had Linux running smoothly, I realized that the real power of my setup would come from the software I installed. At first, this part felt overwhelming because every course seemed to recommend a different tool. I learned pretty quickly that I did not need everything at once. I just needed the core tools that every data science student eventually ends up using.

Python was the first thing I installed, and I used Anaconda to manage it. The reason I chose Anaconda was simple. It makes it easier to install and organize different libraries without breaking anything.

Each project can have its own environment, which helps avoid problems when two projects need different versions of the same library. You do not have to be a tech wizard to use it. You open it, create an environment, and install what you need.

The next must-have tool was Jupyter Notebooks. This quickly became the place where I spent most of my study time. Jupyter lets you run small pieces of code one step at a time. It is perfect for learning, experimenting, testing ideas, and taking notes all in one place.

If you like visually seeing what your code is doing, Jupyter makes the whole process feel way less stressful.

For bigger projects, I switched to Visual Studio Code. It feels like a regular text editor at first, but it becomes extremely useful as projects grow. I liked that I could keep all my files in one place, manage my virtual environments, and even run code right inside the editor without juggling multiple windows.

Once the main tools were ready, I started adding the libraries that every beginner touches at some point. Pandas was the first one because it is basically your main tool for cleaning and organizing data.

If you are ever handed a messy spreadsheet, Pandas helps turn it into something readable. NumPy came next since a lot of other libraries rely on it for fast number crunching.

Scikit learn was another important library because it handles the simpler machine learning models that most classes start with. Things like linear regression, decision trees, clustering, and similar techniques become much easier to use once this library is installed.

Eventually, I moved on to the heavier tools like TensorFlow and PyTorch. These are what you use when you start learning about neural networks and deep learning. They can look intimidating at first, but once CUDA was set up properly, both of them ran surprisingly well on my gaming GPU.

Setup Optimization

Gaming Pc

On the other hand, my desk already looked like a typical streamer setup, so I did not have to change too much. I learned that using two monitors helps even more for data science than for gaming.

I kept my notebook or code on one screen and charts, tutorials, or textbooks on the other. A comfortable chair made long coding sessions easier to survive. Keeping my desk a little tidier also made it easier to stay focused instead of drifting back into gaming mode.

I thought data science would require a massive professional workstation, but my gaming rig handled almost everything I threw at it. With a few software changes, a dual-boot setup, and a little patience, I turned my usual gaming PC into a solid study machine.

If you are starting a data science major soon, do not stress about buying new hardware. Your battlestation might already be stronger than most setups in your class. You just have to unlock what it can do.

Capcom Assures Fans Resident Evil Requiem Won’t Suffer From Technical Issues

Story Highlight
  • Capcom says Resident Evil Requiem won’t show Monster Hunter Wilds’ technical problems.
  • The gaming giant points to the differences in both games, suggesting that they are fundamentally different.
  • Capcom plans to offer as optimized an experience for PC gamers as possible.

Capcom has been on a roll lately, releasing one big title after another. The gaming giant is now gearing up for the much-anticipated release of Resident Evil Requiem, potentially entering a new era for the franchise.

In addition to introducing a new protagonist and different styles of gameplay, Resident Evil Requiem is set to make use of Capcom’s famous RE Engine. Although this engine presented plenty of technical problems in Monster Hunter Wilds, Capcom does not expect these issues to show up for Resident Evil’s upcoming release.

Why it matters: Monster Hunter Wilds was widely criticized for its technical problems, which held back an otherwise solid release from achieving its full potential.

Resident Evil Requiem Technical Optimization by Capcom
Capcom Discusses RE Requiem Optimization | Image via Investor Q&A

During the latest investor Q&A, Capcom was asked to address potential technical problems showing up in Resident Evil Requiem.

The publisher was quick to note that Monster Hunter and Resident Evil offer fundamentally different experiences. These differences extend to system architecture and network features, separating the two games from each other.

According to Capcom, no such problems are expected to show up again due to these reasons. The publisher also reiterated that it is working on optimizing the game for a wide range of PC specifications.

At present, we do not anticipate similar risks. We are developing the game to provide a smooth gaming experience.

Monster Hunter Wilds 4090
Monster Hunter Wilds Was A Disaster On PC

For context, Monster Hunter Wilds’s technical problems were largely associated with the game’s open-world structure.

This release made it clear that Capcom’s RE Engine is best suited to smaller-scale titles, and the good news is that Resident Evil Requiem is not an open-world title like rumors initially suggested. Therefore, Capcom is confident the performance issues will not show up again.

Dispatch On Track To Meet Its 3-Year Sales Target In Just 3 Months

Story Highlight
  • Dispatch is one of the best-rated games of 2025 with critical praise across the board.
  • The title had a sales target for 3 years, which it has met in just 3 months.
  • It has reportedly sold over a million copies, with fans already asking for season 2.

AdHoc Studio’s Dispatch has been a surprise breakout hit this year. It has once again reignited the Telltale-style interactive gaming genre and received a massively positive response from both critics and audiences.

While the numbers are undisclosed for now, it has reportedly sold pretty well, too. In fact, sales have been so overwhelming that AdHoc says Dispatch is on track to meet its 3-year sales target in 3 months.

Why it matters: Indie games are on a roll this year with Silksong and now Dispatch. It is especially prolific considering how the studio almost went bankrupt during the development of the game.

AdHoc Studio's Dispatch
AdHoc Studio’s Dispatch has been a surprise hit this year

Talking to Gamesindustry.biz, Michael Choung, the game’s executive producer, revealed that they had a lifetime target for Dispatch after a period of 3 years. However, it is on the way to achieving it in just 3 months since its release.

We’re on track to do that (meet the sales target) in three months. I think the degree to which it would be successful is something that I certainly didn’t anticipate.

– Michael Choung

Dispatch
Dispatch has been received incredibly well by the industry so far.

Choung said that the studio was confident that the players would like it; however, they didn’t anticipate it becoming this popular. And it is surging even further, with fans already demanding a season 2

For now, according to estimates, Dispatch has sold well over 1 million copies, but the official numbers haven’t been announced. The game also shows there’s still an audience for this genre, if the title is good enough.

Critics Crown MindsEye As 2025’s Lowest-Rated Game On Metacritic

Story Highlight
  • MindsEye has become 2025’s lowest-rated game on Metacritic based on its disappointing 37 Metascore.
  • Tamagotchi Plaza on Switch 2 has the second-lowest Metascore at 43, followed by Ambulance Life: A Pandemic Simulator at 44.
  • Build a Rocket Boy’s first project was an all-out disaster at launch because of bugs and optimization issues.

Many gamers were cautious but excited to see how GTA producer Leslie Benzies’ new studio debut, MindsEye, would pan out. The game’s launch was not only disappointing, but it turned out to be an unprecedented disaster for everyone involved.

MindsEye has now devolved to become the lowest-rated 2025 game on Metacritic. It is currently sitting at a disappointing 37 Metascore on the review aggregator site, with no other AAA experience having a similar abysmal rating.

Why it matters: Mindseye being 2025’s lowest-rated entry once again confirms that MindsEye has been the worst failure so far. Many developers have claimed that crunch culture and abuse from executives led to this mess.

MindsEye has the lowest Metascore out of all other 2025 releases yet.

As per a list published by Metacritic, Tamagotchi Plaza on Switch 2 has the second-lowest Metascore at 43, followed by Ambulance Life: A Pandemic Simulator at 44 on PS5.

MindsEye became the lowest-rated game on Metacritic right after launch. So, the new results also show no one has been able to surpass it yet.

The game’s User Score was also the lowest for most of the year at 2.5 until Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 recently dethroned it with a surprising 1.7 user rating on Metacritic.

On a side note, the open-world experience was so disappointing that it made IO Interactive lose interest in publishing third-party entries.

mindseye glitched featured
MindsEye was full of bugs and optimization issues after launch.

The developers behind the project have since claimed that toxic management has led to this failure. Therefore, the team believes that fans should not expect a Cyberpunk 2077-like redemption arc in the future.

On the flip side, the studio CEO blames saboteurs for the failure and plans to relaunch the game in the future. The updates so far have been lackluster and failed to generate any hype needed to revive interest in MindsEye.

Do you think MindsEye deserves the Metascore it has on the review aggregator site? Is there any other game that should be at the last spot? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

Why Game Development Students Should Analyze Hades for Design Lessons

Story Highlight
  • Hades teaches its mechanics gradually without relying on heavy tutorials.
  • The game’s success comes from all elements (art, audio, story, and combat) working together toward a single goal.
  • Characters react dynamically to the player’s choices, failures, and actions.

Even years after its release, Hades still feels like one of the cleanest examples of smart, modern game design. And honestly, when I was juggling classes and projects, I remember using a paper writing service once just so I could buy a few hours to sit down and really dig into how this game worked under the hood. It was worth it.

Hades isn’t just fun. It’s a case study in how strong systems, good writing, and unique art direction can elevate a game way beyond its genre.

The Core Loop That Actually Feels Good

Hades Gameplay
The game’s core loop feels rewarding because players make progress even when they fail.

The very first thing that hooked me was how smooth the core loop feels. Every run pushes you forward, even when you fail. Hades does this thing where it mixes repetition with just enough randomness to keep each run from getting stale.

The weapons shift, the boons shift, the rooms change, and suddenly you’re in that zone where one more run becomes ten more.

And yeah, that constant sense of progression matters. Even when you wipe, you take something back to the House of Hades. Nothing feels wasted. If you’re an aspiring game developer, this should teach you the importance of respecting players’ time.

Characters That React Like They’re Paying Attention

Hades Characters
Hades 1 and 2 characters compared.

The cast in Hades hit me harder than I expected. These characters don’t just act like quest givers. They react to you, your choices, your loadouts, your failures, everything.

Some of the funniest and most personal lines in the game came right after I messed up a run. That dynamic dialogue system is something more students should try to study.

It shows how even a small shift in how characters respond can make players feel like they’re actually part of the world instead of just passing through it.

Hades taught me how much more powerful a story becomes when you attach it to progress instead of pausing the game to dump lore. Every run gives you a new context.

Sometimes it is a short dialogue, sometimes a new interaction with Achilles or Nyx, sometimes a shift in Zagreus’s relationship with his father.

It made me realize that good narrative pacing doesn’t always need long cutscenes. Sometimes it just needs a steady drip of curiosity.

Unique Art Direction & Audio Design

Hades Art Direction
The art style of Hades prioritizes clarity, making chaotic combat easy to read.

Everyone talks about the art style, but the thing that impressed me most was how functional it is. The contrast, the color choices, the silhouettes, the readability of enemies, all of it serves gameplay first.

In a genre where chaos can easily make fights confusing, Hades keeps everything clear. As a student, this hammered home why readability is just as important as visual flair. The game can be flashy without becoming a mess.

Darren Korb’s sound design is one of those things you don’t appreciate until you start breaking it down. Hits, dashes, spells, enemy cues, environmental sounds, all of it gives you information without overwhelming you.

And the music shifts with the fight so smoothly that you barely notice the transition. That is the kind of audio integration that makes gameplay feel natural instead of noisy.

Hades is tough, but it never feels unfair. A big part of that is how it introduces mechanics slowly, without drowning you in tutorials.

The optional God Mode is also a great example of difficulty scaling done right. It gives players breathing room without removing challenge or progression.

It convinced me that good onboarding should feel invisible. Players learn best when the game lets them discover things step by step.

How Students Can Use These Lessons

You don’t need to build a Hades-style game to study what it does well. When I started applying what I learned from it, a few things made the biggest difference.

Keep the loop simple but still rewarding. Make every failure feel useful. Give characters clear reasons to respond to the player. Use small story beats instead of huge lore drops.

Make the art easy to read, not just nice to look at. Treat audio like a gameplay tool, not just background noise. And watch new players closely to see where they get stuck.

Analyzing Hades taught me that good design often sits in small choices, not big AAA-like systems.

Hades works because everything in it feels intentional. Combat loops, character dialogue, art style, audio, story pacing, all of it pushes toward one goal: making players want to come back.

If you are a game dev student, don’t just play Hades. Study it. Slow down and look at why the game feels the way it does.

Break the systems apart. Take notes. Then take the ideas that fit your style and reshape them into something new. This is how you grow as a game developer.

Ubisoft Halted Trading Because It Could Reportedly Be Acquired By Someone

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft halted trading a few days ago, sparking rumors that it would soon be acquired.
  • Now, a credible insider claims that a Ubisoft employee said the publisher will soon be acquired.
  • The buyer is said to be a non-US-based entity, and the rumor has been circulating for a while.

A few days ago, Ubisoft postponed its half-year earnings results and suspended trading in its shares in an unusual move. The delay suggests the publisher is preparing a major announcement about its future soon, which has sparked a bunch of rumors.

Some users were quick to suspect that Ubisoft is about to be bought by a major presence in the gaming industry, and this tidbit now seems more likely than ever. An industry insider claims that a Ubisoft employee has claimed that ‘someone’ will soon buy the publisher.

Why it matters: The Ubisoft buyout could shake the current balance in the gaming scene. It may have many positive and negative consequences, such as financial stability paired with a loss of creativity.

The insider says an employee revealed that Ubisoft could be acquired soon.

As per a tweet by Detective Seeds, the trade was halted due to “a serious M&A discussion to close on assets.” The unnamed employee also adds that a non-US-based party is serious about buying Ubisoft, and the buyer has already been rumored in the industry for a while.

Someone is serious about buying Ubisoft. I was not told who the buyer was other than “not a US based entity and it has been rumored for a while.”

So, there’s a large possibility that either Tencent or Sony is looking to secure Ubisoft under its umbrella. However, the former is more likely due to past rumors about Tencent teaming up with the Guillemot Family to acquire Ubisoft.

Ubisoft ultimately partnered with Tencent to form a new gaming subsidiary instead, granting the Chinese giant a 25% stake. It’s now possible that Tencent is in talks to acquire Ubisoft entirely soon.

Ubisoft
Regardless, Ubisoft plans to launch 10 games in the next 2 years.

Regardless, Ubisoft has not officially confirmed or denied the acquisition and instead said that trading was halted to prevent unnecessary speculation during the delay. Therefore, it’s best to take it with a grain of salt.

Do you think Ubisoft will actually be acquired this time around, or will these rumors go nowhere? Are you in favor of this acquisition? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
