However, this year with Modern Warfare 4, fans and critics are calling it the best campaign in the franchise in so many years. It marks the return of a more linear gameplay style, with two very engaging, interwoven storylines.
Why it matters: The 2026 release promised a lot of potential from the early trailers, and fans believed Call of Duty could finally return to its glory days; with the campaign, it is finally off to a good start.

There are a lot of things that the new campaign does differently from older ones. For starters, while it is still short, coming in at 8-9 hours, it’s still longer than other recent ones, helping add to the narrative points.
The new campaign is completely built from the ground up, adding brand-new custom locations like a snowy North Korea. Also, the sequences feel much less scripted due to dynamic character switching.
Additionally, the characters are very well written, leading to a satisfying end. This could be the last time we see the Modern Warfare rebooted series in the Call of Duty IP, and if that is it, they are going out with a bang.
