Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine launches in just a few more days, and ahead of its release, the initial reviews are now out for all to see.
Unfortunately, it appears the team’s latest release marks a rare disappointment. Although Insomniac Games now has a solid reputation for delivering great superhero titles, Marvel’s Wolverine hasn’t quite resonated with the critics.
Why it matters: The team’s work on Spider-Man practically saved the IP’s gaming future, so many were incredibly excited for Marvel’s Wolverine when it was first announced.
After 78 critic reviews on Metacritic, Marvel’s Wolverine stands at a score of just 77/100 on the platform. For context, the studio’s last major release, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, scored significantly higher at 90/100.

Needless to say, these scores are much worse than anybody expected. In fact, Marvel’s Wolverine is now Insomniac Games’ worst-rated release in the last decade due to how well-received the Spider-Man games have been.
The game’s previews already suggested that the team was retreading familiar territory with Logan’s combat and narrative, and it seems this is exactly what has held the title back.
Reviews have criticized the fact that Wolverine’s combat can get repetitive quite quickly, and many seem to have found the narrative to be mediocre at best.
Looking at the reviews, the biggest criticism appears to be that Marvel’s Wolverine doesn’t do much to stand out from other superhero games. Of course, this means that the title isn’t bad, but it may be worth waiting on a purchase, especially at the $70 launch price.
