Xbox Failed To Judge The Masses With Game Pass!

Story Highlight
  • An analyst says that Microsoft didn’t do much wrong with Game Pass despite the subscription’s disappointing outcome.
  • He concludes that the mass audience ultimately let the service down by focusing on Roblox and Fortnite.
  • The analyst also states that Game Pass was mainly appealing to enthusiasts.

Xbox has now admitted that its Game Pass strategy ended up being a failure in many ways. The service has somehow lost subscribers despite investments worth billions of dollars, and Microsoft is nowhere near its subscriber goal for Game Pass today.

Much has been said as to why the service failed to live up to its potential, but an analyst points to games like Fortnite and Roblox as the major reasons behind Game Pass’ failure.

Why it matters: Microsoft took a huge gamble on Game Pass, hoping that the service would attract millions of gamers towards the Xbox ecosystem over the course of this generation.

According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, Xbox didn’t necessarily do anything wrong when attempting to sell subscriptions.

Over on a thread created on Bluesky, He notes that Xbox offered a variety of different games to boost sales, but in doing so, the gaming giant failed to assess the market. This meant that Game Pass became a service catering mostly to enthusiast gamers.

As Mat Piscatella points out, the masses care about games like Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft. He believes audiences simply didn’t care enough about playing a vast majority of the games offered on Game Pass.

Game Pass failed because of Fortnite (and other black hole games) and the market not caring about playing lots of different games.

The Circana analyst also discussed Game Pass’ growth, or lack thereof, following the arrival of Call of Duty on the service.

He admits that this was, once again, indicative of the larger market’s preference for free-to-play experiences and specific multiplayer titles. Ultimately, this is why Call of Duty was removed from the service.

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how Xbox approaches its subscription.

The gaming giant will likely scale back the service in some ways as it attempts to appeal to a broader audience. For now, however, Xbox is completely focused on its restructuring efforts.
