A Passion Project Aimed At Burnout Fans!

Story Highlight
  • Wreckreation 2 has been announced for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
  • Former Burnout director Alex Ward is leading development through a newly formed studio.
  • The sequel has potential to reach an untapped part of the industry since EA is no longer focusing on racing games.

Although demand for Burnout has existed for many years, EA has practically moved on from the series and racing games altogether. Former Burnout developer Criterion Games is now part of the Battlefield team, but former developers from the team have just announced Wreckreation 2.

The sequel is moving forward despite the closure of Three Fields Entertainment, the studio responsible for the first game.

Why it matters: EA has left Burnout dormant for years, creating a sizeable gap for an arcade racer built around aggressive driving and plenty of destruction.

The project is led by Alex Ward, who previously served as creative director at Criterion Games, where he worked on games including Burnout 3: Takedown, Burnout Revenge, and Burnout Paradise.

He later co-founded Three Fields Entertainment alongside fellow Criterion veteran Fiona Sperry. Ward is now leading the newly formed development team behind Wreckreation 2, which is being positioned as another spiritual successor to Burnout.

As such, Wreckreation 2 will focus on arcade racing, vehicle takedowns, crashes, and all the usual craziness fans have come to love and expect from Burnout. The game is also set to focus on an open-world format.

The Burnout Series A One of Its Kind

Although the first Wreckreation received a mixed response following its release, many fans are currently excited for potential improvements in the sequel.

Wreckreation 2 is currently planned for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The team currently has no plans to launch the game for older consoles, but a release date has yet to arrive from the developers.

What would Wreckreation 2 need to deliver to feel like a true Burnout successor? Let’s discuss below in the comments.
