Final Fantasy 16 is the latest installment in the JRPG series, and upon launch, the game received excellent reviews from critics. Unfortunately, this reception has not saved the game from a wave of negative user reviews on Metacritic.
There has been a recent surge in new titles being review bombed, and Final Fantasy 16 is the latest game that has been targeted on Metacritic. At the time of writing, the game is now sitting at a user score of 7.0 with a whopping 294 negative.
Why it matters: Review bombing has become a massive problem for Metacritic. The company previously promised to address the issue, but it continues to plague nearly every new release.
Final Fantasy 16 had its fair share of criticism from users due to the issues like the low resolution during combat to achieve 60 FPS.
Before launch, the game also received criticism for unstable frame rate during exploration, and this problem has carried over to the full game. Other criticisms include a very cutscene-heavy narrative, but none of these equate to a 0/10 score.
A few examples of the negative reviews can be seen below.
A few reviews have pointed to reasons like the action focus of Final Fantasy 16, with users claiming that it strays too far away from the JRPG roots of the series. The developers also addressed this, with Square Enix taking a more modern approach with the latest Final Fantasy title.
However, the more extreme reviews with the lowest scores claim that Final Fantasy 16 is the worst game in the series. Some reviewers have also used the instances of PS5 overheating during the demo to lower the score to 0/10.
Nonetheless, the game has only just begun to face this wave of review bombs. Therefore, this user score is expected to fall even further.
Previously, games like Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom faced a similar situation. Despite the nearly flawless reviews from critics, various users rated the game 0/10 to lower the Metacritic user score.
Nonetheless, Final Fantasy 16 is a solid entry in the Final Fantasy franchise. It may not be the best JRPG on modern consoles, but the game has something to offer for nearly every kind of player.
Furthermore, Final Fantasy 16 is set to release on PC in the future. Following the recent reception, the latest Final Fantasy will also be a strong contender for Game of The Year at TGA 2023.
