The Witcher 4: CD Projekt Red Expands Development Team

Development Sped Up!

The Witcher 3 is regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time. Despite the game selling more than 50 million copies over eight long years, the studio has not been able to release a sequel to the RPG. However, developers CD Projekt Red announced multiple new entries in the series last year.

The Witcher 4, codenamed Polaris, is the next entry in the series and will be the first title in a planned trilogy. Although the game is still years away, the company’s latest financial earnings reveal that CD Projekt Red has expedited development on the next Witcher game.

Why It Matters: The Witcher 3 was considered a major milestone for the RPG genre. It went on to win several awards, including the Game of The Year title in 2015. As such, a sequel will generate a lot of hype.

The financial report reveals that the company was focused on Cyberpunk 2077. This included the game’s next-gen version and the upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC expansion, which will receive new details soon.

Phantom Liberty will also be the only DLC expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, meaning that the developers will now be free to focus on the next Witcher game, speeding up the development.

The report further shows that the studio has been gradually allocating more developers to The Witcher 4 since June 2022.

Aside from Project Polaris, other games in development include Project Sirius, a spin-off Witcher game, and Project Canis Majoris, a remake of the first Witcher game. These projects will be developed by external studios.

CD Projekt Red’s last AAA release, Cyberpunk 2077, was a rough launch with multiple bugs and glitches. However, almost three years after the game’s release, the developers have finally redeemed themselves with various updates.

Considering The Witcher is one of their most beloved IPs, fans have high expectations for the next Witcher game. If The Witcher 3 is anything to go by, CD Projekt Red will once again create an iconic RPG, but only time will tell if the game will measure up to The Witcher 3.
