A Cyberpunk Spin-Off Game Based On Edgerunners Anime Was Greenlit By CDPR

The Game Has Been In Development Since Last Year!

Story Highlight
  • CDPR greenlit a Cyberpunk spin-off 2.5D brawler game based on Edgerunners last year.
  • The game has been in development by the studio behind River City Girls and Shantae, WayForward.
  • It’s supposedly in development with multiplayer in mind, with mentions of rollback and online play.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the greatest redemption stories in gaming, and it’s had multiple resurgences over the last few years. The game is so popular in the wake of Edgerunners Season 2 that fans are demanding CDPR work on another major DLC for it.

While CDPR hasn’t officially confirmed a new DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, a new report reveals that the studio greenlit a spin-off 2.5D brawler experience that is based on Edgerunners.

The title began third-party development under the studio WayForward last year, known for works like Shantae and River City Girls.

Why it matters: As CDPR works on its own Cyberpunk projects and other games in established franchises, a third-party Cyberpunk spin-off title would serve as a great addition to the growing franchise after strong performance driven by the Edgerunners anime.

The Cyberpunk Edgerunners brawler game was in development by WayForward, the developer behind River City Girls.

This tidbit comes via a report from MP1st, which cites an unnamed developer’s resume to secure their privacy. The project was in the very early stages of development between 2025 and 2026, with the studio prototyping mechanics and testing frameworks and exploring concepts.

The game would have likely resembled WayForward’s high-energy anime art style of River City Girls with Edgerunners characters. Although it’s unclear whether the title codenamed Project Gemini made it past the skeletal stages, as its current status is unknown.

To make things worse, WayForward had an unannounced entry within a licensed IP in development during September 2025, with a vertical slice already prepared for the game. However, its funding was reportedly delayed, which halted development, followed by a wave of layoffs that struck the studio.

An in-depth look also revealed mentions of online play and rollback netcode, which implies that it was in development with online multiplayer in mind.

Edgerunners was a huge success for the sci-fi franchise, boosting Cyberpunk 2077's sales by a ton.

Even if the game is still in the works, we might not see it for another few years. Credible rumors have suggested that CDPR is working on Cyberpunk 2077 DLCs, but they might also be a long way away.
