Earlier this year, the gaming world erupted when Bungie announced that it would be ending support for Destiny 2 after 9 years. Monuments of Triumph ended up being the last content update for the game, and fans flocked to the internet to pressure Sony into greenlighting a sequel.
The petition to develop Destiny 3 reached over 175k signatures, with the game hitting 130k concurrent players on Steam when the final update dropped. As it turns out, the fan protests have had an effect on Bungie, as the developer has announced it is not done with the franchise just yet.
Why it matters: Considering how the franchise is Bungie’s magnum opus, the decision to make new Destiny games will be beneficial for the studio’s future.
Bungie studio head Poria Torkan and Head of Product Josh Deane announced in a new video that the studio has more stories to tell in the Destiny universe. On the developer’s website, the executives emphasized that they want to explore more worlds in the franchise, and aren’t done with Destiny just yet.
To gain back the trust of its players, Bungie will bring back vaulted campaigns, raids, and destinations to Destiny 2. However, restoring part of the game’s history won’t be an easy task, and developers will need time to deliver old content to fans in a stable form.
The studio also made some core commitments to players in the blog, saying that Bungie is dedicated to building a long-term future for Destiny. The developer will update fans in the coming months regarding the restoration of Destiny 2, and considers it the first step in forging new stories and titles for the IP.
Considering the outcry around the game when Bungie announced it was sunsetting support, it’s safe to say the studio is making the right decision by reassuring fans that Destiny has a long-term future.
