Crimson Desert is one of the few examples of modern games that are really well-optimized. The studio used its in-house BlackSpace Engine for the title, which scales very well to hardware, leading to respectable performance across the board. Pearl Abyss says that there are a lot of conveniences to switching to a commercial engine like Unreal Engine 5, but they decided to reject using it because they preferred the control rather than the nifty features. Why it matters: The studio had already used the BlackSpace Engine for its MMO Black Desert Online, so it was pretty well-versed with it, so switching over to a new engine wouldn’t have made much sense. While commercial engines are excellent and offer many practical features, we didn’t want to rely on external technology for our core competencies in game development. Talking to Mein MMO, Jin-ho Yoon, Senior Leader of the Game Engine, talked about why the studio stuck with its proprietary engine for Crimson Desert. He said they preferred to keep control over convenience. We’ve seen that the majority of modern AAA games prefer using Unreal Engine 5. Its visuals are undoubtedly unmatched, with modern tech like Ray Construction, Nanite, and more, but it has severe optimization issues. Pearl Abyss’s BlackSpace Engine offers a good balance. It has above-average visuals while maintaining excellent optimization, especially for a title that is so massive in scope. So, in the end, the studio did make the right choice.
