Pearl Abyss’s Crimson Desert had huge expectations riding on its back. The start was a bit shaky, but the developers made timely changes, and it is now among the best releases of 2026, and at the helm of it is the studio’s in-house engine.
Now, Crimson Desert’s Blackspace Engine has been crowned with the Best Technical Innovation award at the 2026 Develop:Star Awards, held during The Develop Conference in the UK, winning over other major competitors.
Why it matters: Pearl Abyss utilized cutting-edge technology for its major title. The open world, the breathtaking visuals, and even the very decent optimization were huge standouts due to the in-house engine.

The 2026 Develop:Star Awards described Crimson Desert’s Blackspace Engine as a massive milestone in proprietary engine tech. It praises the engine for innovation and bringing the enormously scaled title to reality.
Interestingly, it was up against some of the other best in-house engines we have seen in recent years. These include Kojima and Guerrilla Games’ excellent Decima Engine, and Doom’s very reliable idTech 8 engine.

It is truly remarkable what Pearl Abyss was able to do with Crimson Desert. It is built on the formula of other successful games in the genre, but takes everything up a notch with its amazing exploration and world-building.
