- Bungie recently announced that it is ending support for Destiny 2 with a final update.
- The update surged the player count to over 160K players, and over 130K right now.
- These are huge numbers compared to Marathon’s measly average 12K CCU.
Bungie has been in hot water ever since it announced that it is ending support for Destiny 2, in a way that completely kills off the 12-year-old live service franchise. Amid its last update, fans are showing why it is the wrong move.
The last Destiny 2 update, Monument of Triumph, went live, and fans have jumped headfirst into the title, with the current player count being over 130K. It even hit over 160K players a couple of days ago, the highest in 2 years.
Why it matters: Despite the title not being in the best of shape and the player base falling, it still has long-term fans that are dedicated to it, so ending the support feels like a betrayal of the years of loyalty.

Currently, Destiny 2 has over 130K players on Steam, suggesting that Sony and Bungie have made the wrong decision by shutting it down. In contrast, the studio’s latest, Marathon, has just around 12K players.
It was previously reported that the studio had started neglecting Destiny, as a bigger team was working on Marathon. They have made it their primary title, but based on the numbers, that shouldn’t have happened.

The demand for Destiny 3 is still at large, with a petition with over 170K signatures. Players are really disappointed with this move, and they didn’t want the franchise to end, which is quite apparent from the current numbers.
