- Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced adds new cutscenes to the game as part of the original story missions.
- These cutscenes have been criticized as being robotic, like those from the Assassin’s Creed RPG trilogy, due to the lack of motion capture.
- Fans have also criticized the remake for reusing what appears to be Kassandra’s idle stance from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Ubisoft is seemingly doing everything right with Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced. Between the gorgeous visual facelift for the title and small tweaks to combat, almost everything has changed for the better here.
However, fans have still had their criticisms of the remake. For starters, Ubisoft’s removal of hidden blade combat became a common talking point not too long ago, and following the latest previews, many have publicly criticized the game’s cutscene quality in some instances.
Why it matters: Ubisoft’s modern Assassin’s Creed cutscenes are far inferior to the quality of past games due to the lack of motion capture. This is seen best in recent RPG titles from the studio.
In particular, fans have slammed the Lucy Baldwin questline, which is a brand new addition to the story of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag.
Because the story did not exist in the original game, it reverts to the same style of cutscenes as the latest Assassin’s Creed RPGs, which have become infamous for lifeless conversation sequences with little to no motion capture.
Compared to other cutscenes, it’s clear that Edward Kenway and Lucy Baldwin here aren’t nearly as expressive as other characters in the game. This contrast stands out even more for Edward himself, since he has the same level of expressions in the original cutscenes. As expected, fans have not taken well to the new cutscenes.
Interestingly, Ubisoft also appears to have modified other sections of the game with such additions. As The Hidden One points out on Twitter, one story mission has been updated with an extra conversation between Adewale and Edward, resulting in the same robotic cutscenes from the RPG Assassin’s Creed era.

This cutscene did not exist in the original game, and it appears many believe Ubisoft would have been better off leaving it out entirely. Many have also pointed out that Ubisoft has reused Kassandra’s idle stance from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for Edward in one of these cutscenes.
What do you think about the quality of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced’s new cutscenes? Do you consider this level of quality acceptable? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
