Intel B560 was a budget chipset for Intel’s 10th and 11th generation processor, also called Rocket Lake. In contrast, Intel B660 is a budget line chipset for Intel’s 12th-generation Alder Lake CPUs. Intel B560 supports the LGA1200 socket, whereas the B660 supports the LGA1700 socket. Both chipsets only support Memory Overclocking, not CPU OC. Intel B560 supports PCIe 3.0 only in chipset compatibility, whereas Intel B660 supports PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0. Intel B660 also has 14 PCIe Lanes compared to Intel B560 having 12 Lanes.

The B560 chipset supports DDR4 memory. On the other hand, the B660 chipset supports DDR4 and DDR5 memory. Intel B560 has support for six SATA 3.0/6Gb/s ports, whereas B660 has support for four SATA 3.0/6Gb/s ports. Also, B560 doesn’t have support for RAID compared to the B660. There are no other significant differences than these.

How Are B660 Motherboards Different

Firstly, B660 Motherboard hasn’t got support for P-Cores and E-Cores Overclocking along with Base Clock (BCLK) Overclocking. To summarize, B660 Motherboards don’t have CPU Overclocking, and an unlocked CPU won’t benefit you that much if bought for the sake of pushing it to its limits. Unfortunately, Z690 motherboards have this compatibility only. Alongside B660, H670, and H610 motherboards also don’t have CPU Overclocking compatibility. This inability to overclock will fit most people’s nerves as it has crushed the dreams of some who wanted CPU overclocking at a budget, like the B550 chipset from AMD.

However, Intel has bestowed the B660 with Memory Overclocking. Memory Overclocking is tuning some RAM parameters (timing, voltage), enabling your RAM sticks to transfer data at incredible speeds than the defaults. Memory OC decreases the time your CPU has to wait to get the required information from the RAM, ameliorating your PC performance. B660 retains the dual-channel architecture for memory from Z690.

DMI 4.0 Lanes have also been decreased from 8 to 4 for our B660 chipset. DMI connects the CPU to the chipset and governs the maximum possible I/O bandwidth. B660 chipset doesn’t have PCIe 5.0 as it’s designed for people not spending that extravagantly. However, it does support PCIe 4.0. Sadly, PCIe 4.0 lanes have been halved over the Z690 chipset. We get 6 PCIe 4.0 Lanes and 8 PCIe 3.0 Lanes for B660: a total of 14 PCIe Lanes.

Intel B660 chipset will support a single M.2 Key M NVMe SSD, unlike Z690. This lack of PCIe 4.0 Lanes will itch a lot of users due to the unavailability of more PCIe Lanes as they can’t plug in more M.2 Key M SSDs. Well, don’t be frustrated just yet. The point is that, majorly, PCIe 3.0 is being used for devices engulfing the fact that M.2 SSDs are using it too. Secondly, there is a high probability that the majority of the users won’t be installing more than 2 SSDs which makes this PCIe setup a good combo.

You’re good to go! Tech nerds, spending money to install more than 2 NVMe SSDs, will automatically redirect to Z690 motherboards or change their desired chipset to H670 because that will be a better placement for them. However, you will support Intel VMD (Volume Management Device) and their Rapid Storage Technology 19x.

RAID

Another critical feature that the B660 chipset loses is RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks). It is a storage virtualization technology that combines your multiple physical drives into one drive. RAID is a method used to store similar data on various HDDs or SSDs installed in your system to retain its integrity in the case of a drive breakdown.

Woefully, B660 doesn’t support the “PCIe RAID 0,1,5 Support”, unlike the Z690 and H670. However, if your workspace contains huge sums of file handling and you need those files restorable, or if you’re dealing with many files but storage costs play a role in your game, go for something that supports RAID. Otherwise, you won’t need it that much.
