Baldur’s Gate 3 Sold 10 Million Units After Incredible Success In 2023

One of The Best-Selling Games of 2023!

Story Highlight
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 has more than 10 million players today.
  • Larian Studios has sold more than 7.5 million copies since August.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was perhaps the most surprising launch of 2023. Part of the niche CRPG genre, this game encouraged millions to try CRPGs through its ability to dominate social media conversations and headlines.

Debuting as Steam’s second-biggest launch of 2023 behind Hogwarts Legacy, the game was always poised to sell millions. While Larian Studios had not confirmed a particular sales figure until recently, the studio points to 10 million copies sold.

Why it matters: The evolution of Baldur’s Gate 3 between early access and full launch has been fascinating to follow. These two phases of development paint a completely different picture of the game.

As stated by Michael Douse, Baldur’s Gate 3 was propelled to 10 million players in no time. Since the game is not available on subscriptions, these players were a result of direct sales, leading to roughly 10 million units sold.

While the publishing director suggests sales are higher than 10 million, he did not provide an exact figure. Therefore, numbers remain unclear, with the last update at 5.2 million sales coming from the Belgian Embassy.

It should be noted that the CRPG already sold 2.5 million units in early access. As such, the full launch has led to at least 7.5 million sales across consoles and PCs since late August 2023.

The director revealed this statistic while discussing the recently confirmed mod support for Baldur’s Gate 3. He urged players to stay patient, using the 10 million player count to emphasize how big the game has become.

To accommodate all these players, Larian Studios requires more time as it figures out the modding implementation.

Various games from 2023 sold 10 million copies. However, compared to other franchises, this achievement is more significant due to the position of Baldur’s Gate 3 as a niche IP.

Following intense competition, Larian Studios has undoubtedly earned its position among the biggest games of last year. The CRPG is still averaging over 640K players daily, proving that its success is far from over.
