GTA 5 has recently been shown to run on devices like the Nintendo Switch and Android smartphones.

While no official port for these platforms exists from Rockstar Games, a passionate team of developers has made substantial progress so far. Unfortunately, Take-Two has now come forward and completely shot down this port.

Why it matters: GTA 5 has sold millions of copies, so both Rockstar Games and Take-Two are quite protective of their magnum opus.

Take-Two Interactive has taken action against a fan-made native Android port of GTA 5. The port was a community effort aimed at getting GTA 5 running natively on Android hardware and Nintendo Switch rather than through cloud streaming or remote play.

This Android project was approaching release before Take-Two stepped in. Details about the exact legal notice have not been fully made public, but the team behind the port itself is shutting down.

As per the team behind the project, Take-Two did not pull any punches and sent a cease-and-desist letter to halt development immediately.

It should be noted that this community-led project was somewhat based on the previously-leaked GTA 5 source code, so Take-Two had strong grounds for its cease-and-desist.

Elsewhere, GTA 5 has become playable on PC through PS5 emulation. The game continues to be widely used by the community for testing across different applications.
