PlayStation’s permanent shift away from physical games has led to a lot of interesting thoughts on the prevalence of physical media in the industry.
The gaming giant has also faced its fair share of backlash from the fans, and it now appears to be surveying developers on the matter. In fact, the CEO of NIS America says that discussions regarding the decision are currently underway between Sony and various developers.
Why it matters: PlayStation taking the situation so seriously is a good sign since it may lead to major changes that fans want to see.
Kenzo Saruhashi, the CEO of the studio behind Disgaea, has said Sony is listening to feedback from developers regarding physical PlayStation discs.
As reported by Kotaku, one possibility for the future is Sony shipping codes in physical boxes. This would mimic Rockstar Games’ plans for the physical edition of GTA 6. However, nothing is set in stone.
Kenzo Saruhasi says that PlayStation is taking in a lot of feedback from customers and developers, so it’s hard to say where it will go from here.
In our discussion with Sony so far, I think that they’re hearing a lot of the feedback from customers. It’s possible that discussions may change in the future.
Ultimately, it seems PlayStation did not see the masses reacting to its decision as they did. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how it handles future discussion related to physical discs.
