There has been a massive backlash against this, but the company seems adamant about it and has filed a new patent to make online payments easier. The patent explores buying digital games, DLCs, microtransactions, and more by just tapping on your controller using your mobile phone or credit card. It sounds pretty much like what you do when you go out to a store. Why it matters: This is a very clear move to push more towards digital. It will make payments more streamlined and convenient for users, making it feel like you’re shopping at a Best Buy or something. This new patent ultimately aims to bring NFC payments to the DualSense controller. The “video game controller-driven information transfer” patent aims to allow users to tap and pay using their phones or bank cards. Despite the whole discourse against Sony’s disc-less future, this does sound like pretty interesting and rather convenient tech. However, most patents never see the light of day, so we never know if it’ll become a reality. But this will be a smart move, as almost every phone and bank card now support contactless NFC payments. Again, the other way to look at this is Sony’s attempt to further solidify its digital future.
