Cheating in online games isn’t new; it’s been going on for as long as we can remember. However, now that games are becoming highly competitive, it has kind of become an entire industry on its own, and it is worth billions of Dollars.

Activision has revealed that the game cheating market is $8.5 billion a year. Some players reportedly spend thousands yearly, which has led to it becoming this huge. Across just 15 games, cheat sellers generate $3.5b per year.

Why it matters: These stats are really alarming and showcase how many cheaters actually infest online multiplayer games. The trend is especially high for Call of Duty, which has a reputation for it.

Activision posted an entire diagram that shows how cheat sellers dominate the market using developers, third-party sellers, and more. The whole illicit business is now a multi-billion-dollar industry.

The Ricochet anti-cheat detects thousands of these cheaters and bans them. Recently, the studio sent a dedicated team to a cheater for a cease-and-desist case, highlighting how threatening the cheat market has become.

It also hinders the gaming experience when you die out of nowhere. Teams have been trying to mitigate the issue by asking players to turn on Secure Boot; however, cheaters still find a way to slip past the anti-cheats
