Ever since Asha Sharma was appointed at the start of this year, Xbox has been on a rollercoaster ride. From the return of exclusives to the massive layoffs the company went through in July, eventful is the only word that can describe the new CEO’s tenure so far.
Now, because Xbox is continuing to restructure, insiders are claiming that a new wave of layoffs is going to hit the gaming giant soon. As it turns out, the Halo franchise is going to find a new home as part of these changes.
Why it matters: The shooting franchise has suffered a lot from the unstable nature of Halo Studios. Hence, a change of environment might be the best thing for Master Chief.
According to NateTheHate, Halo will be under the control of Activision Blizzard after the upcoming structural changes to Xbox. The credible insider clarified that only the IP is moving to the Call of Duty developer, while Halo Studios will remain a separate entity inside the Xbox ecosystem.
This isn’t the first time Activision taking control of the franchise has come up, with insider Mr Rebs revealing last month that Xbox was planning to put Halo under the care of the publisher. Moreover, rumors have also been circulating about Activision studio Sledgehammer Games developing a brand new Halo multiplayer title.
Considering the mediocre sales performance of Halo Campaign evolved, which sold 32x fewer copies than Call of Duty Black Ops 1 and 2 on PS5, this might be the best long-term move for the franchise.
The issues plaguing Halo Studios have created an environment of cynicism around the IP, with former developers believing that nothing can bring back the magic of Halo. Hence, a change of stewardship is arguably the most beneficial thing that can happen to the most storied franchise under the care of Xbox.
