- A user has reported the RTX 5090 connector melting while testing the new DLSS 5.
- The GPU power draw exceeded the normal range, causing the connector to melt.
- This shows how straining DLSS 5 is for your system in its current state for now.
High-end Nvidia and, in some cases, AMD GPUs have become notorious for connector-burning issues. Team Green launched the 12V-2X6 connector to solve the issues caused by the 12VHPWR connector, but the melting issues have persisted.
While the connector has been a problem for years now, another new controversial thing these days is DLSS 5. And recently, an RTX 5090 had its connector melt while testing the new upscaler due to its sheer power draw.
Why it matters: The new DLSS version is absurdly hard on the system, as Nvidia says it causes 50-60% power loss and requires a ton of power. Early versions even needed 2 5090s for proper functioning.

A user named Erek recently tested DLSS 5 on their RTX 5090 in NBA2K27, which led to the connector melting off. The user noted that the GPU was drawing over 600W, which is a lot more than the recommended power draw.
For context, MSI’s power rating for the connector is 575W, whereas the user measured the GPU wattage at around 613.5W, although the power was from the whole motherboard, and not just the RTX 5090 alone.

Still, the GPU has a normal power draw of somewhere around 450W to 600W, and the overall rating exceeded it, showcasing how much stress DLSS 5 is putting on the system right now in its current state.
The new upscaling tech has been very controversial, as it alters the entire art style and also costs a considerable performance loss. Now, this makes everything even more worrying since it shows how straining it is for your system.
