New Sony Patent Lets AI Model Train NPCs to Behave Differently Based on Your Playstyle

This Could Offer Much More Lifelike Games and NPCs!

Story Highlight
  • New Sony patent aims to introduce uniquely tuned NPCs depending on the player.
  • It will utilize AI models to train the NPCs to behave based on your playstyle.
  • This will provide a unique experience to each player and cut development costs.

Sony has been pushing a lot of patents recently, testing the waters with what technology they can implement in hardware and games in the future. This new one is certainly interesting, as it aims to center the gameplay around the player.

A new patent from Sony lets AI models train non-playable characters, or NPCs, in-game, so their behavior is based on your playstyle. It means each player could have a different experience based on the way they play.

Why it matters: The document says that developing NPCs that are behaviorally tuned to players is difficult to create manually because of the extensive work, but AI models can be trained to do it right in the game.

Sony patent aims to train NPCs’ behavior using an AI model to adapt to playstyle

The patent titled “AI-Adapted Non-Player Character for Video Game System” aims to extract data from playing habits and use it in NPCs in real-time. This could change NPC desgin, behavior and everything else.

Now, using AI for NPCs is nothing new, but using models to train a system that will provide unique NPCs is certainly new. This could be particularly useful with boss fights, especially in something like the soulslike genre.

However, most patents, as we know, don’t really make it out, but this one seems like it has potential. AI is already being used extensively in development, and these models will expedite development and reduce costs.
