PlayStation’s physical disc cancellation was announced a while back, and many important individuals, such as Hideo Kojima, Shuhei Yoshida, Yoko Taro, etc., have shared their thoughts on this announcement.
Shawn Layden has also come forward with his thoughts on the subject, calling a future without physical games depressing.
Why it matters: PlayStation still sells a lot of physical games globally, and in some cases, physical copies account for a significant portion of total game sales.
Speaking to Game, former PlayStation head Shawn Layden noted that a PlayStation ecosystem without discs would be depressing. He stated that discs still have a lot of value and represent a key component of the gaming industry.
As per Layden, discs should continue to exist, and he suggests PlayStation license out disc manufacturing to ensure this ends up being the case. This is why he feels the issue is still solvable at the end of the day.
Unless they determine a way to license that to some of these bespoke manufacturers, there’s no way to make it happen.

Layden says that this is the same approach Microsoft uses, so Sony could do the same if it intends to continue producing physical media.
