- The Witcher 4 was announced to be targeting a 2028 release, after Sony ends discs.
- CDPR says that despite that, they’ll have a box with a code and freebies for collectors.
- The joint CEO says they are big fans of physical media and have always supported it.
Starting in 2028, Sony will eliminate physical releases in favor of a digital-only model. This will obviously impact the entire market, meaning even third-party games won’t include discs either, marking the death of physical media.
CDPR recently talked about the situation and stated that if Sony gives up on discs, The Witcher 4 will still have a physical edition at launch. However, it will be a digital code in the box, but it will have some freebies too.
Why it matters: It was recently revealed that the highly anticipated sequel is targeting a 2028 release window, which falls in line with Sony’s cutoff date for physical releases and has fans worried.

Studio joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski addressed concerns that The Witcher 4 will be a digital-only title. Unfortunately, for now, it will indeed be digital-only, as CDPR can’t really do anything about Sony’s new policy.
We’re nerds ourselves, and we like that. We always supported that (discs). We’re going to have a box that’s going to have some feelies in it. Something you’re going to be wanting to open up and enjoy.

However, Nowakowski states that the studio is a big supporter of physical media and doesn’t really believe that discs should go away. For that, they’ll ship The Witcher 4 with a box and freebies to cater to collectors.
It obviously won’t have a disc, but a redeemable code, and Sony is doing a similar thing. It does beat the purpose of discs, which is ownership, but the studio can’t really do anything except what they plan to.
