GTA 6 Has Not Used The Controversial Generative AI To Fasten GTA 6's Development!

Story Highlight
  • Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 has not used generative AI during its long development cycle.
  • Rockstar North studio co-head Rob Nelson simply said ‘no’ when he was questioned about it.
  • Every asset and piece of worldbuilding has been done manually by developers.

The GTA 6 extended look was a staggering success, to say the least, crashing both Netflix and Twitch servers in the process. Netflix viewership rose by a staggering 35% in the US alone during the showcase.

We’ve also been finding out more exclusive info about Rockstar’s magnum opus thanks to the spree of previews after the official reveal. The Kinda Funny Games hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller have now confirmed that GTA 6 did not use generative AI during development.

Why it matters: Generative AI is currently notorious for being more of a rudimentary shortcut in the gaming scene than a viable alternative, so this confirmation by Rockstar Games has made GTA 6 fans quite happy.

GTA 6 Map Size
Rockstar Games is about to redefine open-world games once again with GTA 6.

The hosts mentioned during the Kinda Funny Games podcast that Rockstar North studio co-head Rob Nelson simply said ‘no’ when asked about whether GTA 6 used generative AI for development.

While using the tech could have sped up development and helped with asset creation and worldbuilding, it could also have taken away the feeling of organic realism that Rockstar is known and praised for in GTA games.

Therefore, fans of the game have vastly praised the studio for not using generative AI as a shortcut to speed up development times. Kinda Funny Games hosts also confirmed that the base GTA 6 game will not have any microtransactions or additional in-game purchases.

Jason and Lucia will have a Bonnie and Clyde-like relationship dynamic.

GTA 6 is aiming to be an absolute behemoth of a game, with its main storyline lasting over 80 hours without counting any side content. The title’s map is also 2x the size of its predecessor and over three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2.

And all this comes with a smooth 4K 30 FPS performance on the base PS5. Additionally, GTA 6 NPCs have been dubbed to be 10 years ahead of every other studio in the industry, as they feature over 600K unique animations.

Do you think Rockstar Games did the right thing by not using the different conveniences of generative AI to speed up development? Would it have affected GTA 6 negatively? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
