Simple Trick That Worked Wonders For Gaming Laptop!

Story Highlight
  • A gaming laptop user saw up to a 15°C CPU temperature drop after switching the laptop’s surface.
  • The user replaced the wooden desk with a metal surface and immediately saw improved temperatures in games like Cyberpunk 2077.
  • In other cases, slight elevation can also help improve gaming laptop temperatures.

Gaming laptops have come a long way, with the latest models featuring RTX graphics cards being more capable than their predecessors. However, cooling remains a sensitive subject across laptops to this day due to their form factor.

It’s no secret that gaming laptops can run hot even under normal use, but one recent case shows that the desk itself can make a surprisingly large difference.

Why it matters: Keeping temperatures under control can help increase hardware longevity when it comes to gaming laptops.

Putting your laptops ontop of a metal surface is actually insane for cooling (in AC room)

According to a post shared on Reddit, simply swapping to a metal surface instead of a wooden desk led to a huge difference in temperatures.

Redditor u/MetalReserve2351 explained that temperatures in Cyberpunk 2077 went down from 80-90°C to 75-83°C. The gaming laptop in question was an Acer Shadow Knight with an Intel Core i7-14650HX and RTX 4060 configuration.

Redditors in the comments also noted that raising the laptop slightly or putting it at an elevated angle can assist cooling further in such cases. Of course, there are methods to ensure better cooling in laptops, namely relying on undervolting or using a cooling pad.

Still, the fact that metal surfaces can help bring temperatures down this quickly can be useful to know for those currently using a gaming laptop.

Because component shortages have pushed prices of gaming hardware up so high, it’s never a bad idea to take extra care of your hardware. Therefore, any trick that helps extend the hardware’s lifespan can be valuable, even if it doesn’t initially appear to be.
