- Windows 11’s Weather app can consume more than 1GB of RAM.
- The usage represents nearly 20% of available memory on an 8GB PC.
- This finding is exactly why Microsoft promises to optimize the OS for PCs with limited memory.
While Microsoft has promised to optimize Windows 11 for 8GB PCs and withdrawn its 32GB of RAM recommendation, the tech giant seemingly has a long way to go before it can limit memory consumption on the platform.
A new report suggests that Windows 11’s weather app alone can consume over 1GB of memory.
Why it matters: Windows’ memory management has degraded over the years, and this is one such example that highlights this problem.

According to Wccftech, the app can take up nearly 20% of memory on a machine with 8GB of RAM. That is a notable figure for a lightweight utility, particularly due to the ongoing memory shortages.
Even when idling, this application can consume around 500MB of RAM. This figure jumps up to over 1GB when the application is opened, mainly due to the presence of intrusive ads in the software.
Of course, this is a problem when modern laptops are now reverting to 8GB of maximum memory. For comparison, Apple’s Weather app on macOS consumes as little as 250MB of RAM.
Windows 11’s problem seems to stem from relying on the WebView 2 framework, which means that the software effectively works unlike a native Windows application. That, combined with the frequency of ads in the Weather application, means that it can hog crucial resources when running on a PC.
The good news is that Microsoft is currently aiming to fix these types of problems. However long that might take, the tech giant is constantly working on improving the Windows experience.
