Microsoft Now Catering To Users With 8GB of Memory!

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft confirms plans to optimize Windows 11 for systems with 8GB of memory.
  • Microsoft says it is also optimizing Chromium and Webview 2 components as part of this goal.
  • This statement follows global memory shortages, which could lead to 8GB of memory becoming mainstream again in laptops and other devices.

Windows 11, for its many problems, is constantly receiving new updates and fixes from Microsoft. One key talking point with the modern OS is its memory utilization, which many feel isn’t the best.

Previously, Microsoft improved memory usage specifically for a more responsive experience. Following this update, the tech giant is once again promising improvements in this regard, particularly targeting PCs limited to 8GB of RAM.

Why it matters: Global memory shortages due to AI workloads have led to RAM shortages. Major laptop manufacturers are, therefore, expected to begin shipping baseline laptops with 8GB of memory again.

Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 Optimization for 8GB of Memory

In a recently published blog post, Microsoft outlined the many improvements it has recently made to the operating system. The company also shared a list of areas it hopes to tackle for the rest of the year.

This section outlines “Memory optimization for 8GB and above” as a key point. Microsoft intends to reduce Windows 11’s memory footprint to ensure it can run smoothly, even on lower-end devices.

This is something the gaming giant likely didn’t care much for until recently. 16GB of memory for laptops has been a mainstream standard for a while, but with AI interfering with the memory supply chain, software companies must once again cater to older standards like 8GB of RAM.

Microsoft says that it has already tuned WinUI 3 to ensure apps built on it consume less memory. Moreover, the company has optimized Chromium and Webview 2 components to reduce RAM consumption across the board. These efforts will continue throughout the rest of the year.

Anyhow, this is ultimately good news since the RAM optimizations should benefit all users with Windows 11 PCs. Even when using 16GB of memory, the OS has become infamous for needlessly taking up excess memory, so these optimizations have been long overdue.
