Starfield has come a long way since its initial release in 2023, but many still believe the game isn’t all that special.

Despite Bethesda’s pedigree, the team’s first new IP in many years has failed to live up to franchises like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. This is also why a former developer believes Starfield 2 probably won’t happen.

Why it matters: Starfield ultimately wasn’t able to realize Bethesda’s vision for a massive sci-fi RPG, leading to little hope for a sequel.

Starfield 2 may not be part of Bethesda’s future plans, at least according to comments from Kurt Kuhlmann, a former Bethesda developer.

The same developer worked as the lead systems designer for Starfield, noting that the original Starfield was not anywhere near successful enough for a sequel to make sense.

Speaking to FRVR, Kurt Kuhlmann argues that this is a bit of a shame since Starfield 2 could be a much better game than the first due to the lessons learned by Bethesda.

Since Starfield’s release, the team has already improved the RPG a lot, so a sequel would have likely continued this trend.

I don’t think Starfield was anywhere near successful enough to do a Starfield 2.

Of course, Bethesda also has its hands full with multiple Fallout and The Elder Scrolls projects for the future. This means that the team likely isn’t thinking too hard about Starfield 2 at the moment, if at all.

The good news is that Starfield itself is still being improved and supported, so fans likely won’t feel the need for a sequel anytime soon.
