Ex-Starfield Dev Feels Bethesda Needed To Focus On Procedural Generation More!

Story Highlight
  • Former Bethesda developer Nate Purkeypile says Starfield just isn’t that great.
  • The developer criticized the game for its limited content and repetitive environments.
  • He says that Bethesda should have gone all in on procedural generation for the RPG like Hello Games.

Starfield, launched in 2023, may not have been Bethesda’s biggest RPG ever, but it is still supported to this day. The title has become quite popular over time, even though many remain lukewarm about the game.

A former developer has also discussed Starfield recently, discussing why the game may have fallen just short of being great.

Why it matters: Starfield came with many promises, and with Bethesda’s name attached to the project, expectations were immediately through the roof.

Ex-Bethesda developer Nate Purkeypile does not think Starfield is “great” and believes the RPG needed more procedural content to support the scale Bethesda was aiming for.

Purkeypile’s criticism revolves around Starfield’s repetition. He argues that the game would have benefited from a few planets with more unique content. The developer raises the point that Bethesda’s approach should have relied on procedural generation to a greater degree.

He pointed to No Man’s Sky as an example of a game with thousands of planets using procedural generation to populate said planets. As per Nate Purkeypile, Starfield doesn’t really use procedural generation as much as it rearranges hand-made content from Bethesda throughout the game’s many locations.

The former developer believes this is what truly holds the game back.

It’s not that I think the game is bad. I just don’t think it’s that great.

Starfield Has Improved Quite A Bit

Nate Purkeypile’s criticism does ring a lot of bells since Starfield was criticized for its repetitive content a lot at release. Perhaps this is something Bethesda can address with The Elder Scrolls 6.

The team is currently hard at work on this RPG, so it will likely take any and all criticism very seriously.
