- Sony’s latest fiscal report reveals that 82% of PlayStation game sales are now digital.
- This shows why the company is shifting away from physical starting in 2028.
- There has been a massive uproar, but it seems fans still prefer buying digital games.
Sony created a massive uproar recently when it announced it would get rid of physical media for PlayStation, starting in 2028. Fans have been furious at this, but new data reveals that this transition has been coming for a long time now.
According to Sony’s latest financial report, 82% of all game sales on the PlayStation have been digital this quarter. So, this means physical sales have dropped to just 18%, which helps explain why the digital shift happened.
Why it matters: Fans have taken to social media and decided to boycott PlayStation for a week, but the data shows that people have leaned on digital so much that the companies have decided physical is no longer a good idea.
PlayStation’s Q1 FY26 report is out, pointing out a lot of new details. The most prominent of which is that 82% of their sales have been digital. This includes all content, including micropayments, DLCs, and everything else.
Interestingly, this trend has been recurring. The ratio has consistently been high towards the digital side based on the last full year, where 78% of all games sold were digital on average for the entire FY2025.

Ever since the shift to digital was announced, everything the company has posted online has had comments filled with people protesting against the change. However, it doesn’t seem like there’s any going back now from this.
Additionally, even industry giants like Ubisoft have also supported Sony’s decision. Even Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser said he doesn’t care about physical games; however, he did say that if fans want them, they should be provided.
