Why it matters: Ubisoft is among the biggest names in the industry, and it typically sells millions of games on PlayStation consoles, with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced being the latest release from the company to do so.
Ubisoft addressed PlayStation’s shift towards the digital format in its latest earnings call. When asked to comment on whether this move would possibly impact demand for future Ubisoft titles, CFO Frederick Duguet noted that this shift would not matter too much in the long run.
He discussed how PC’s transition to digital distribution only grew the market further. The CFO notes that accessibility to hardware will be a bigger factor in determining whether the games industry continues to perform at its current pace.
According to Frederick Duguet, the shift to digital-only consoles could even make hardware cheaper for individuals at the end of the day. As such, he suggests that the lack of physical games will not disturb the games industry too much.
