"If People Want That, I Think Companies Should Provide It"

Story Highlight
  • Dan Houser says he loves physical media but doesn’t care about physical games.
  • He says that despite this, if fans want them, companies shouldn’t get rid of them.
  • The debate has been ongoing ever since PlayStation announced its all-digital future.

Ever since PlayStation announced that it’s getting rid of discs, fans have openly made their opinions heard. There has been a massive backlash, and people just aren’t ready to restrict themselves to easily revocable digital game licenses.

Rockstar co-founder and former GTA writer has also weighed in on the debate. He stated that he personally doesn’t care for physical games, but if the consumers want them, then companies shouldn’t get rid of them.

Why it matters: The physical vs digital debate is a complex topic, as players prefer ownership of games, but all data suggests digital sales are booming, while physical sales have been at their worst of all time.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Dan Houser was asked about his thoughts on physical media. Talking about comics, he said he loves physical, but when asked specifically about games, he said he doesn’t really care.

I don’t know that I care, but if people want that, I think companies should provide it. But I don’t know that I personally care.

Physical sales fell to their worst of all time in the US this year

He continued that, despite his stance, if consumers want them, then the companies should provide them. This is exactly what the fan sentiment is; even if they aren’t buying them, they’d like to have the option to do so.

There is also the fact that almost 73% of the PS5 sales in the US as of July were the disc editions. So, again, players love the flexibility, and even though digital sales are higher, there is still a big market for physical titles
