Story Highlight
  • Santa Monica Studios announced a new God of War game.
  • The new title will feature Kratos as the lead and is set directly after God of War Laufey.
  • God of War Laufey, referred to as an “expansion”, features a story essential to the next game as it bridges directly into it.

The God of War franchise is about to get a whole lot busier as Santa Monica Studios has announced yet another title in the series.

The new God of War game takes place directly after God of War Laufey and will serve as a direct continuation of the upcoming title.

Why it matters: Usually, God of War games take a considerable gap between releases, but in the near future, we may see a huge influx of titles releasing back-to-back.

God of War Laufey Will Feature Multiple Mythologies

Today, at the San Diego Comic Con panel (via IGN), Santa Monica Studios officially announced the next God of War game, stating that Kratos will return as the protagonist.

God of War Laufey, announced just recently, features Faye as the lead in her fight against the other gods of different mythologies in Everywhen, a realm where gods go after their death.

At the event, head of creative Cory Barlog called God of War Laufey an “expansion” rather than a “departure“, further adding that he wanted to “see how things connect” with this new title.

God of War Laufey is meant to tie into the next God of War game, and Kratos will remain as the true lead of the series, as per Cory’s words:

(We will) always tell stories about Kratos.

There are no details regarding the next God of War title yet, but we do know that God of War Laufey now releases on February 16th, 2027.

In any case, expect the next mainline God of War title to be a next-gen game for the PlayStation 7. Earlier rumors have suggested that Kratos might wield a scythe in that game and may return to Greece, but that remains to be seen.

Counting in the two new God of War games in addition to the remasters of the first three, this makes a total of five God of War games in development, in addition to the TV show at Amazon Prime.
