Sony And Amazon’s God Of War Series Is In Jeopardy, Kratos Actor To Be Recast After Set Accident

Ryan Hurst Needs A Year To Recover From The Injury He Incurred On Set.

Story Highlight
  • The God of War series is recasting its lead actor following a set accident.
  • Ryan Hurst, who was playing Kratos, will now be replaced by Sony and Amazon.
  • Production is supposed to resume in August, but the new Kratos hasn’t been revealed yet.

Arguably, God of War has been Sony’s most consistent franchise in the past decade or so. Developer Santa Monica Studios is already preparing to launch another new project in the form of God of War Laufey after delivering a duology of critically and commercially successful games in a span of a few years.

With reports suggesting that the new title may launch in the first half of 2027, fans won’t even have to wait a couple of years to dive back into the game’s world. However, the TV series currently in development at Amazon has hit a major roadblock and could face a delay.

Why it matters: Sony and Amazon’s decision to recast Ryan Hurst makes sense from a business perspective, but not standing by the actor after his injury will certainly turn a few heads.

God of War Amazon
Ryan Hurst will no longer portray Kratos in the God of War show.

As reported by Deadline, the God of War show is facing a massive hurdle as Amazon is set to recast the lead actor playing Kratos following an accident on set. Ryan Hurst, who was cast as the series lead, tore his bicep trying to perform one of the more complex stunts while shooting in Vancouver.

Even though the actor has already had surgery, the rehabilitation time, according to professionals, is at least six months, and Hurst will need a full year to completely recover and return to the set. As a result of this lengthy rehab, Sony and Amazon have decided to cast another actor to play Kratos instead of Ryan Hurst.

As the filming for God of War began in February, four episodes of the TV series have already been shot, and according to Deadline, the new actor will reshoot these sequences from scratch. Production is supposedly set to resume next month, but the name of the new actor hasn’t been revealed yet.

God of War Laufey
Sony could be recasting Ryan Hurst so the show launches alongside God of War Laufey

Considering how fans were skeptical of Ryan Hurst’s appearance in the promotional images, Sony has a second shot at getting Kratos right, and one can only hope they do a better job this time around.
