- PlayStation appears to be using social media bots to defend its physical media decision.
- Most accounts praising PlayStation for going all-digital showcase bot-like behavior, raising many eyebrows.
- These accounts seem to be quite new, use AI-generated images, and seem to have promoted other bots as well.
PlayStation continues to face backlash over its announcement to end physical disc production. This announcement has even led to hastening efforts on PS5 emulation, with the gaming giant also potentially facing worsening relationships with its partners.
Amid the backlash, a new report discusses an interesting strategy from PlayStation. It appears the gaming giant is making use of bots to push back against the ongoing criticism.
Why it matters: It’s not unheard of for massive gaming corporations to use bots for promotional content on social media. PlayStation seems to be falling back on this strategy out of desperation.
This unexpected report comes from popular YouTuber and insider Moore’s Law is Dead, who recently used AI to research accounts that seemed suspicious and oddly defended PlayStation’s decision while going against the grain.
The report outlines mainly three such instances, showing a clear pattern between all these accounts. For starters, all accounts were created several years ago, yet their tweets dated back to only a few months ago or one to two years at most.
Similarly, the accounts also showcased discussions regarding various different subjects, focusing only on one topic at a time. For instance, the first flagged social media account praised PlayStation’s all-digital decision by quote-tweeting a post highlighting the PS3 store shutting down as a win for digital storefronts.
Moore’s Law is Dead also discusses a clear pattern of these accounts interacting with many now-deleted accounts on Twitter/X. Additionally, many of them exclusively rely on AI-generated images for their profile pictures, posts, etc.
In fact, the YouTube seems to have found a link between GTA 6 and these accounts during this process. This is interesting since GTA 6 is also a digital-only release.

Despite the existence of these bots, however, the actual backlash to PlayStation’s decision continues to be much louder across social media. Practically every post from the gaming giant continues to attract audiences who are against this decision. As such, it seems this strategy has not been too successful so far.
