Is The End of Major Day 1 Releases on Game Pass Near?

Story Highlight
  • Xbox could finally move away from releasing its major games day 1 on Game Pass.
  • Fable could be the company’s last attempt at it, amid faltering sales and revenues.
  • The service leads to most people skipping buying Xbox games at the full price.

Xbox is in a bad state right now. The company is going through a major restructuring, cutting jobs and studios, and its latest financial report is also quite grim. It could also be set to make some massive changes to its game releases.

A report suggests that Fable could be Xbox’s last attempt at releasing a major AAA title day 1 on Game Pass. The service’s growth has stalled, and the company has struggled to sell its games at full price due to the day-one availability.

Why it matters: Since most Xbox users already have Game Pass, they skip buying the title outright, leading to poor sales numbers, and Xbox may be looking to address this amid a massive drop in revenue.

Forbes‘ Paul Tassi has highlighted major Game Pass issues and says that Fable could be the last big day 1 release on the platform. While the service makes it easier for users to access the game, it makes things difficult for the company.

Additionally, Fable is also targeting a PS5 release, and unfortunately, the release has lined up with God of War: Laufey, which could completely overshadow it. And with most Xbox users being on Game Pass, this is bad for business.

Asha Sharma also highlighted how the service failed to add meaningful growth to the company.

So, to keep sales higher for its big titles, Xbox could pivot away from day 1 releases. This makes sense for business, but then you have to deliver quality to compete against other publishers’ best work as well.

For now, even the newly released Halo: Campaign Evolved isn’t doing as big of numbers as expected. It was the global top-seller on Steam, but debuted with just 25K players and mixed reviews. So, Xbox has its work cut out for it.
