Story Highlight
  • A journalist claims that the leadership at Xbox Studios “absolutely despises” Game Pass.
  • They think the service has devalued their games and there shouldn’t be day 1 releases.
  • They claim that it’s been detrimental to the industry despite Xbox’s massive investments.

Game Pass was introduced to provide great value and thousands of games to users at a fraction of the cost. Initially, it did seem like a great step, but with time, as underlying issues have emerged, the service doesn’t seem that glorious at all.

Now, a new report reveals that leadership within Xbox hates Game Pass because they think that it destroys the value of their games. Things are even worse now as the service’s growth has completely stalled

Why it matters: Xbox messed up the Game Pass model with multiple price increases, introducing a weird number of tiers leading to huge losses, and the service just not feeling worth it to both the developers and users.

Bloomberg’s Jason Scherier revealed that the leadership at most Xbox studios despises Game Pass. They are against releasing their games on day 1 on the service as they believe it devalues their hard work and effort.

There are a lot of people out there in studio leadership within Xbox who absolutely detest Game Pass and think it has destroyed the value of their games. It’s been a detriment to the games industry.

A previous report also suggests that Microsoft internally views releasing day 1 games on the service as a failed bet. This is certainly true, as they could’ve generated a lot of lost revenue with certain flagship titles.

For context, some of the popular titles this generation were Indiana Jones and Doom: The Dark Ages. The interest was super high, but many people resorted to experiencing them on Game Pass rather than paying $70.
