- Kojima Productions may no longer retain access to the Decima Engine after Sony ditched Physint.
- Hideo Kojima and his studio have contributed massively to the engine’s legacy over the years.
- Physint is now expected to be developed in another engine, most likely Unreal Engine 5.
Kojima Productions and Guerrilla Games had an intimate relationship in 2016-2017, as both studios united to work on Sony’s exclusive Decima Engine for their projects. Therefore, Hideo Kojima’s team has greatly contributed to the game engine over the years.
However, the publisher’s decision to abandon Physint also reportedly means the game will now lose access to the Decima Engine. In other words, it is expected to switch over to Unreal Engine 5 or a new proprietary engine to continue development.
Why it matters: Physint’s development might have to completely reboot if an engine switch is really in order, which could delay its development timeline for an additional few years.

Senior games journalist and industry insider Paul Tassi mentioned this tidbit in his Forbes report, arguing that Sony’s decision to ditch Physint also includes restricting access to the Decima Engine.
Kojima Productions played a huge role in refining the Decima Engine. They modified it over the years for the Death Stranding games, and the engineering feedback and advancements massively improved Decima for Sony’s own projects.
Decima Engine is known for boasting great visual fidelity alongside optimization that UE5 projects often struggle to achieve. It would not have reached these milestones without Kojima’s engineering contributions, so he’s often credited with perfecting the Decima Engine.

Physint will now lose out on Decima-specific optimizations. This might push Kojima Productions to develop proprietary tools in case UE5 can’t achieve the level of optimized cinematic fidelity Hideo Kojima is chasing for his action-espionage project.
The game was also relying on Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures to blend film and games into one cohesive structure, so it’s unclear how the project will move forward under Xbox to reach the same ambitions.
On a side note, PlayStation reportedly abandoned Physint over budget concerns and its stricter deadlines.
Do you think Physint having to switch to another game engine like Unreal Engine 5 will throw off the current progress entirely? Will Kojima’s dream even be realized on UE5? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
